Problem Solving Graphic Organizer

The Interdisciplinary project name was Mental Illness. Working in this project, it helped students
understand more about mental illness. After finishing the project, many were able to identify some of
the factors that cause mental illness.This assignment was completed as a group. We had enough time
to finish it. We had time to finish it during school hours. I would meet with my group during
advisory. To finish any final details, we would work on it at home. Using google docs was useful
because we were all connected at the same time finishing the assignment. In this assignment we were
to learn about mental illness. We learned that many teens like us suffer a mental illness. Some of
them suffer a mental illness without even knowing. After the research we made, we made a
powerpoint. The powerpoint would educate the community on what was a mental illness and how to
detect it at time. This assignment fits in the Problem Solving category because we were able to learn
about more about mental illness. In our community we are not well informed. We had time to prepare
ourselves. We worked in teams and search about mental illness in secured websites.

The title of the second assignment is Toxins. In this project we learned that our soil contained many
dangerous toxins. One toxin was lead. Lead is a problem in our community. We learned that lead is a
dangerous toxin that causes dangerous illness to people that live in our community. This assignment
was completed a few months ago. Us students, had time to complete this assignment at home and
during school hours. We had a lot of time to finish the project during school. Some team member
needed help to finish their section. We were able to use google docs at home to help our teammates
finish their section. In the assignment we were required to learn more about toxins. We had to learn
what was happening in our community. Then, we were to inform people in our community about the
toxins like lead that are in our water, soil, and other materials. We made a presentation to make it
more clear. This IDP assignment fits in the problem solving category because we were able to
investigate more about our community. We worked in teams. In our teams, we tested our soil and it
was detected with toxins. We discovered that because our plants would not grow.

The SLO's that I achieved in both assignments were Active citizen and Effective communicator. I
was an active citizen by going with my team to an elementary school and inform 6th graders about
toxins. I was an effective communicator because I was able to write information about toxins. We
communicated well with each other in our team based on who was working on what. I was an
effective communicator by communicating well with my team and asked for help to each other.
Then, I was an active citizen because I was able to go to speak to a school and inform them about our
project. Finally, I was a critical thinker because we had to solve and figure out why our plant was not
growing.

Comparing the two assignments, 3 areas of growth were communicating, able to work together, and
be more responsible. At the beginning I was a shy and quiet person. This assignment has helped me
to be more confident about public speaking. I am not where I want to be but I know I will be able to
speak more in the future. Next, I wasn't comfortable working with other people I did not know. Now
I have no problem working with others. While working with others it has made me new friends and
now more about them.
Finally, I have been more responsible. I learned that every project has a responsibility. Now I take
my time finish my work. The only area I have to improve is my communicating skills. Comparing
myself from the beginning, I have improved. I feel comfortable but I feel i still need to practice more
and speak up.The skills I have learned can absolutely help me in the future. In college, I have been
told that I will be doing a lot of presentations. Being responsible and being able to dominate my
nerves can help me communicate better and present clearly. This skills will hopefully make me stand
out and be a better student.
