Media constitutes the backbone of democracy. In the 21st century, with the
influx of the internet, media has become an inseparable part of both, the real
as well as the virtual world. Media plays an important role in the progress
of the nation and performs pivotal functions which include the surveillance
of social, economic and political developments. Further, it identifies the
existing socio-cultural issues and provides a major platform for a debate on
diverse topics. Thus, media plays a significant part in the democratic
process of the country and has become one of the mechanisms to capture,
manipulate and exaggerate attention of the citizen.
A free press further strengthens the democratic process as it helps to expose
corruption and monitor governmental officials and also the policies of the
government. Moreover, by increasing the awareness and knowledge of the
voters, media is significantly contributing to the growth of the democracy,
and is thereby playing an important role in increasing accountability and
redefining the political arena.
Further, media plays a key role in furnishing information and monitoring the
process of economic policies, which has resulted in effective and
transparent policies. In addition, timely and relevant information supplied to
the citizens establishes higher social standards for the society.
Thus, media has created a unique space which provides incentives to the
citizens to make informed choices.
The National Seminar being hosted by the University Institute of Legal
Studies (UILS), Panjab University invites a discourse on the various issues
arising from the interplay of media and the democratic institutions of the
country. Research Scholars, Academicians and Professionals are requested
to participate in this thought provoking theme and discuss, debate and
provide solutions to the existing issues of media and democracy.
