International Maritime Organization (IMO) introduced Energy Efficiency Design Index

(EEDI) in order to improve energy efficiency for ship. Every ship attained to EEDI has to be
calculated and not higher than required EEDI that calculated from the reference line and
appropriate reduction factor. The reference line value represents the world fleet average and is
dependent on the ship type and size. The maximum value of EEDI will be reduced periodically,
the reduction factor represents a reduction for the EEDI relative to the reference line value and
is increased in a set of time intervals.

Research conducted by Ančić & Šestan (2015) estimate the CO2 emission from bulk
carrier fleed based on the EEDI and compare it with the requirement of reaching mean global
CO2 stabilization level of 550 ppm in the atmosphere. This research calculate the EEDI in
several scenario that has been planned by IMO. In the first scenario, the required EEDI is set
10% below the fleet average (“SR-10”), in the second 20% below the fleet average (“SR-20”)
and in the third 30% below the fleet average (“SR-30”). The author also do to approach to
related industry and regulatory in order to get the feedback to get the alternative ways to reduce
CO2.

From the research, when compared the “no regulation” the requirements EEDI set by
MEPC (2011a) from 2020 to 2040 are sicnificantly reduce the CO2 emission from ships
reduction of about 1420 millions of tons of CO2 is expected for bulk carriers. There is a great
possibility that these reduction rates are either too lenient or too strict, depending on the ship
type. For bulk carriers there are designs able to meet the Phase 3 required EEDI available today.
So a market self-regulation policy is suggested. “SR-20” policy requires that the ship has the
EEDI 20% lower than an average ship of its kind with the same capacity at the time of placing
a building contract. The advantages of this policy is that it provides a good feedback from new
ships allowing a change of the required EEDI.
The advantages of this research is we can know how big we can reduced CO2 by applied
the EEDI regulation and keep the earth healthy. The disadvantages of this research is there are
many unconfused words in this research, and the method was not given clearly.
