Nursing is considered the most trusted profession because they radiate care and

compassion. My personal philosophy for nursing is caring is the backbone of the profession.

Nursing is a rewarding occupation; however, it takes someone special to take it on. A nurse who

is not caring would not make a difference as it does. A nurse needs to be caring because it will

motivate them to go above and beyond. For instance, a nurse who cares immensely for their

patients will do everything they can to make sure their patient is safe. A nurse does their tasks

under their scope of practice because that is what they are qualified to do. This helps with

promoting patient’s safety and quality of care because nurses are working under what they are

trained to do. Patient’s safety also includes becoming their advocate. Nurses are an advocate for

their patients, meaning questioning potentially harmful orders from physicians or communicating

with other coworkers for potentially harmful actions.

Additionally, it is important for nurses to show and keep their professionalism.

Professionalism is shown through the nurse’s interactions with patients, coworkers, and

managers. They interact with an appropriate and positive attitude, treating everyone with respect.

Professionalism is also important when it comes to communication with peers. Being respectful

while communicating with coworkers allow for better teamwork and collaboration. Lastly, being

able to accept feedback graciously is important because it is always beneficial to learn ways to

improve in patient care.

Furthermore, self-care for nurses is extremely important. As a nursing student, I have a

glimpse on the importance of self-care is because you can burnout easily if nothing is done. Self-

care examples include doing activities you enjoy and taking a moment for yourself. Additionally,

leaving work at work when you are at home. While self-care is important, it is also beneficial for

nurses to continue learning and educating themselves on the new technologies and evidence-

based practice. During my time in nursing school, I continue to believe that a nurse needs to care

for their patients holistically. Therapeutic communication is also important because it can be

used to make patients feel heard and safe. In the end, I am more determined to take care of

myself and to continue to learn and care for my patients as a whole.
