B. Internship Schedule

The internship program was done in two days in a week, every

Monday and every Friday. The working time is five hours from 9 AM

until 2 PM. The internship period actually lasted from February 27th,

2017 until April 7th, 2017 but the time needed to be postponed until

April 17th, 2017 because the Translation and Interpreting students had

to join the study tour to Yogyakarta and there were day-offs like Good

Friday celebration.

C. Internship Plan

Before the internship program began, two lecturers of UKRIDA

Department of English, Miss Frieda and Miss Silvia, explained the

students’ concentration to Miss Yanfi Yusniar as the principal. There

were four Students, two Creative Writing (CREW) students and two

Translation and Interpreting (TIN) ones. This was done with an

intention to help students get the tasks that were relevant to their

concentrations. We made an agreement with the school to work only

on Monday and Friday, because we had classes in our university on

Tuesday to Thursday. The task that we did was given by our

supervisors, Miss Monika and Miss Sufie. So, there were two plans

also for Translation and Interpreting students.

First plan was doing on Monday with Miss Monika:

- Giving tasks to students of classes VIII-1 and VIII-2, proofreading

the results and explaining the corrections of the errors they made

- Writing anecdotes

- Selecting some of the anecdotes to put in the bulletin

Second plan was doing on Friday with Miss Sufie:

- Making a movie review

- Making a play

- Writing an article about Sekolah Kristen Kalam Kudus Green

Garden

- Compiling the bulletin

CHAPTER III

INTERNSHIP ACTIVITES REPORT

A. Daily Activities Report

 Monday, February 27th, 2017

Four students who did the internship program in Sekolah

Kristen Kalam Kudus Green Garden were me and Rita from

CREW and Kristanya and Faradila from TIN. We came at 7

AM as told to do so. We did not directly meet our supervisor,

Miss Monika, because she was teaching the students at that

time. She is an English teacher and she was our supervisor

every Monday.

After the class ended, we met Miss Monika. We discussed

the tasks and she explained about the students, class time, break

time, and classes. Miss Monika also suggested us to teach on

that day in classes VIII-1 and VIII-2.

During the lesson, I and Rita decided to give them a writing

task. The students of VIII-1 were asked to write descriptive

paragraphs while the VIII-2 students had to write fables. After

students finished doing the task, Rita and I collected their

works. Faradila and Kristanya were going to check them. We

went to the teachers’ office after that.

 Friday, March 3rd, 2017

We came at 9 am and met the other supervisor, Miss Sufie. She

was an English teacher too. She was our supervisor every

Friday. The CREW students entered the 12th grade classroom

during Miss Sufie’s teaching time. We watched two short films

made by the 12th grade students. Miss Sufie gave us homework.

The homework was to make a movie review. The students were

told to write down their opinions about the films in a piece of

paper.

 Monday, March 6th, 2017

I and Rita entered the classrooms of VIII-1 and VIII-2.This

time, the task types were switched. The students of VIII-1

made fables while the students of VIII-2 made descriptive

paragraphs. After their tasks were done, we collected them and

proofread them.

 Friday, March 10th, 2017

I and Rita submitted the movie review. We got a task to

proofread the students’ opinions about the movies. After we

had finished proofreading, we explained the corrections to

them. The corrections included the grammar, the spelling, the

punctuation and the word choices.

 Monday, March 13th, 2017

Miss Monika had a meeting to attend, so she must go and gave

us the tasks before leaving the school. She told us to enter VIII-

1class to explain the correction that Faradila and Kristanya had

given. In the classroom, there was Miss Donna as a teacher

who was in charge to make sure the class got explanation form

us. We were going to explain the correction by using LCD, so

we should make PowerPoint presentation slides. The lessons

delivered to them were about comparative, article, tenses,

subject-verb agreement, missing word, and possessive. A

teacher named Miss Susi told us to make a wall magazine

about a place named Via Dolorosa that we should submit on

March 17th.

 Friday, March 17th, 2017

We submitted the wall magazine about Via Dolorosa. Then,

we proofread stories made by tenth grade students. The stories

were interesting, they had touching moral values and good

plots although some of them needed to be improved in the

grammar, the spelling and the punctuation. There were some

stories that were confusing to understand.

 Monday, March 20th, 2017

We entered the VIII-2 classroom. We explained the

corrections of their fables. Just like last Monday, we explained

the corrections used a LCD projector. This time, our supervisor

Miss Monika was in the class, supervising us. After we had

finished explaining the corrections, she gave us some feedback

and comments of our presentation. The materials for VIII-2

students were about tenses, subject-verb agreement, passive

voice and possessive adjective.

 Friday, March 24th, 2017

On this day, the CREW students were given a task to write

poems, proverbs and an article. The theme of poems and the

proverbs was school life. It was not really easy to do in my

opinion. I tried to make the last words of the lines to rhyme.

Therefore, I needed to find words which had similar-sounding

ends. The article that we had to write was about Sekolah Kalam

Kudus Green Garden. I faced some difficulties in doing it

because I needed to think about the school’s positive points of

and the advantages of studying there for students. Thankfully,

it all can be done well and we could finish the tasks on time

without having interruption.

 Monday, March 27th, 2017

Miss Monika told me and Rita to make anecdotes. We were not

required to make all of them by ourselves. We were allowed to

find or take some anecdotes from the internet, but surely we

had to give credits and/or put the source links. The number of

anecdotes that we had to give was eight. It was quite

challenging to me because anecdotes were supposed to be

funny. In contrast, I almost never made funny stories which

were short. I had made a comedy story but it was a play which

contained much longer events.

 Friday, April 7th, 2017

Miss Sufie gave me and Rita a task to write a play (or script).

The script must be about school life as well, just like the

proverbs and the poems that we wrote last Friday. We made a

story about a boy who was addicted to a computer game. He

strove hard to reach the higher levels and neglected his school

assignments and tests, making his report card bad. The script

was titled Priority Against Pleasure. After we had done

writing, we gave it to the TIN students, Faradila and Kristanya

to translate it as told by Miss Sufie for their tasks.

 Monday, April 10th, 2017

We almost reached the end of our internship period. I and Rita

gave scores to the VIII-2 students’ work. After that, I along

with Rita, Faradila and Kristanya, had to prepare the files that

were needed for making the bulletin. We re-checked our tasks,

looked for pictures, and combined our work results. The theme

of this bulletin was about school life.

 Monday, April 17th, 2017

On the last day of internship, we recapped our bulletin. We set

the layouts and page orders. Arranging the page order was the

hardest part because we had to print it out and combine it with

staples. Therefore, we needed to make sure if the page order

was correct.

B. Activities Report Based on Concentration

As a Creative Writing student, the tasks that I got were related to

writing. It also involved grammar, spelling and punctuation. The tasks

that were given by Miss Monika were the fables and the descriptive

paragraphs written by the 8th grade students. In this part, we checked

their writings and gave corrections to them. It was like working as an

editor or a proof-reader. However, we also explained the corrections to

the students and taught them how to apply the correct grammar such as

possessive adjective, tenses, etc. despite not being TESOL students.

Another task given by Miss Monika was making anecdotes. I felt

unusual to it. During the writing process, I was afraid that my

anecdotes were cheesy and not funny at all. Because of that, I only

wrote two anecdotes and the rest of them were taken from the internet,

in some websites and blogs.

Miss Sufie gave me and Rita tasks in which we had to use out

creativity and critical minds. First, we needed to make film reviews.

We paid attention to the scenes, the music, the acting and the

dialogues. We gave comments in the review we wrote.

We also made proverbs and poems. Each of the CREW students

must make two poems and two proverbs. I made two proverbs; each of

them consisted of two lines while the poems contained four lines. In

making the poems and the proverbs, there were some difficulties that I

faced, such as in finding the rhyming words to put at the end of the

sentences. However, it was not as difficult as making anecdotes to me.

One task that was relevant to CREW was writing the play. This

task was given by Miss Sufie. This task was related to the

Screenwritng and Playwriting course that we got in the fifth semester.

In terms of making a school life themed story, we decided to make a

story about a boy who was addicted to computer games. This had been

a common problem that was overcome by teenagers, especially

students, in Indonesia. Therefore, it might be interesting to write and

easy to understand by the readers.

C. Other Activities during the Internship

Other than doing the tasks that were related to Creative Writing, I

was also teaching in classes VIII-1 and VIII-2. It was done in order to

clarify the corrections of the students’ works. We explained the use of

tenses, articles, possessive, active and passive voice and subject-verb

agreement. Besides teaching, another activity is to make a wall

magazine about Via Dolorosa, a street within the Old City of

Jerusalem. It was done near the Passover celebration. The wall

magazine was in English. The teaching and making the wall magazine

activity were done by all of the internship students from both TIN and

CREW.
CHAPTER IV

EVALUATION

A. Evaluation

During this internship program, there were many important and

valuable lessons I got. When I was in the teaching sessions in classes

VIII-1 and VIII-2, I faced the class conditions. These two classes were

very different. As had been told by the school’s teachers, the students

of VIII-2 were very noisy and might be difficult to manage. In

contrast, most of the VIII-1 students were easier to manage and had

better academic performances in comparison to VIII-2 students.

Through this activity, I could learn how to act and behave in front

of those kinds of students. It was not easy at the beginning, but I tried

to adapt to the situation of each class. Some teachers there suggested

me and my friends not to laugh when the VIII-2 students were making

fun and/or saying jokes. Because if we laughed, they would think that

we were not firm.

Unfortunately, I was a person who can laugh easily. Therefore,

when some VIII-2 students were saying funny things, I directly

laughed. I had tried to hold it in but it was quite hard for me. At the

end of our internship program, I and my friends received feedback

from the students. The feedback that the students gave was telling us to

be more creative, more confident and more exciting.

I was also encouraged to raise my creativity when I was doing the

projects. Making a script was one of my favourite activities to do. I

could express the characters’ feelings through words and gestures. I

was pushed to imagine the atmosphere of the story. Writing the poems

and the proverbs motivated me to be “agile” in choosing words; it

helped me to make rhyming lines.

B. Learning Experience

In this internship program, there were new things I got. First, I

learned to be more responsible and punctual. I am currently in the sixth

semester. Therefore, I had a bigger workload. I had to be able to

manage my time between doing the internship assignments and the

college assignments. Both types of assignments were important

because they were requirements for me to pass the semester. I had to

finish them on time and make good results.

I surely had to be wise in managing my time. When I had free time,

I helped my friends from the Translation and Interpreting (TIN)

concentration do their internship assignments. They were given a task

to translate the stories that were written by the school’s students. I

learned to have a strong team work by helping the fellow internship

students to finish their work even though I was already free and having

my free time.
C. Theory and Actual Experience: A Comparison

In the fifth semester, the Creative Writing students had the

Screenwriting and Playwriting course. In this course, I studied how to

write a script (or play), including the types and the format. In writing a

script, I always followed the standard format guide by Matt Carless.

By following this guide, I knew how to set the format. I could

understand where I must write the title, the scene descriptions, etc.

This guide was very useful when I wrote the play Priority against

Pleasure for the bulletin.

From the first until third semester, I had the Reading and Writing

course in which I studied to write various kinds of essays and

paragraphs. There were several different kinds of essays such as

descriptive, expository, narrative, persuasive, etc. In writing essays,

ideas organization is one thing that is very important. This material

was very helpful when I wrote the article. I could separate the article

into several parts. The first paragraph was the introduction to Sekolah

Kalam Kudus Green Garden. The second paragraph told about the

advantages of studying there and the last paragraph was the

conclusion.
CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion

As a Creative Writing student, English skills are not the only things

that are needed to make good writings. Certainly, creativity also plays an

important role in writing. Creativity cannot just stay the same way, it has

to be improved more and more as time goes by. The way to improve it is

by practicing, just like the quote “practice makes perfect.” This internship

program was very beneficial to me. It introduced the working world to me.

Indeed, it supported me to prepare for the future after I graduate from this

university and work at a company.

All of the tasks given by the supervisors were very useful. Writing an

article, poems, poetry and a movie review surely sharpened my creativity

and my critical minds, hence my concentration, Creative Writing, I

definitely had to be creative and able to make good writings. Because of

this internship program, I also learned to be discipline in managing my

time. I also learned about the situation at the workplace where I met

people with different personalities and behaviours. It was not really easy

for me to cope with because I still also had my college assignments that I

had to fulfil as well.

B. Suggestion

This internship program is helpful for student to understand about the

working world before they graduate. By joining this internship program,

students can apply their skills and the materials that they have learned in

the class. Therefore, it is very good that UKRIDA Department of English

(UDE) organizes this kind of program. It is not only beneficial for the

students who have to learn about the working world, but also for UDE to

be known by other people; for example by doing an internship program at

a school, the school’s students can find out about this department and may

be interested to study here.

My suggestion about this internship program is to make it a more

useful experience for the student. It must not just be a working experience

but the students also have to learn something from the program. Other than

applying the academic aspects, student shall learn the suitable attitudes in

working places like being punctual, discipline, friendly, honest and

humble. By doing that, people will respect the students and it surely

reflects the image of the university.

Napoleon was involved in conversation with a colonel of a Hungarian
battalion who had been taken prisoner in Italy. The colonel mentioned he
had fought in the army of Maria Theresa. “You must have a few years
under your belt!” exclaimed Napoleon. “I’m sure I’ve lived sixty or
seventy years,” replied the colonel. “You mean to say, “Napoleon
continued, “you have not kept track of the years you have lived?”
The colonel promptly replied, “Sir, I always count my money, my shirt,
and my horses, but as for my years, I know nobody who wants to steal
them, and I shall surely never lose them.”
