In the development of Estrella’s character in the book Under the Feet of Jesus, it

represented how Estrella is shown with anger at the beginning of the story to show lots of detail
of how Estrella is confused and looking at the tools in the box. Then, the middle part of the story
shows how Estrella is hurt from the words and the author uses figurative language to do so.
Lastly, at the end of the paragraph, Estrella felt strong and powerful with the help of details and
the strong tone. All of these three parts of the story show that Estrella learns to get better with
the help of her solving her curiosity.

Estrella first feels mad that she cannot see the toolbox or understands what the tools are
used for. In paragraph five, it says, “...the funny-shaped objects, seemed as confusing and
foreign as the alphabet she could not decipher”. This explains more about how Estrella cannot
read or understands what the toolbox is for. This connects with her being angry at the beginning
of the story because Estrella was flustered, confused, and angry for not understanding anything
at all about the toolbox and why the people kept it for. So, this shows how Estrella is full of
curiosity and she decides to learn more about the toolbox and hoping, too.

Around paragraph 40, we begin to see Estrella feeling hurt after being judge by
Mrs.Horn and saying that Estrella looked dirty and did not like her appearance even though
Estrella gets fixed well everyday from her mother. This hurt Estrella and made her feel that she
lost confidence in herself. On paragraph 38-40, it describes, “...Estrella realized words could
become as excruciating as rusted nails piercing the heels of her bare feet”. This evidence is a
figurative language. The author used figurative language in order to make the reader feel how
much pain it really affected Estrella. Estrella said it felt like rusted, dirty nails going inside her
feet meaning that it really hurt her a lot. The meaning suggests that Estrella is a sensitive young
girl who gets hurt from how she looks and shows her weak side of her.

However, in the last paragraph, Estrella learns to become strong and felt like someone
new. Someone she can rely on herself and won’t let anyone back her down. On paragraph
70-72, it perfectly describes it and says, “She lifted the pry bar in her hand, felt the coolness of
iron and power of function, weighed the significance it awarded her”. This paragraph shows lots
of details and by putting strong words such as “power” and “coolness of iron”. These words
represent further to Estrella’s character on how strong she became after holding those tools.
Holding those tools gave her a sense of power and the word iron is used to show the strength is
within Estrella and how Estrella can learn new things and face head-on. The tone in the last
paragraph is vastly powerful and gives a deep emotion on how powerful holding a tool can be
instead of being weak.

To conclude, Estrella begins her character development as a young girl who is angry
and always wanting to know everything meaning that she is a girl full of curiosity and
determined that she will find out what the toolbox does. The next section of the story then shows
Estrella as a weak girl who takes small words as big hits to herself. I saw this as a sensitive girl
who cannot take opinions or judgments too well until the last paragraph. The last paragraph
conveyed the reader that Estrella learned to be a strong, powerful girl when wielding the tools. It
makes Estrella as a character as a strong being and learn more stuff and comforting tougher
stuff like learning how to read. Estrella learns that it is important to learn these tools and
learning how to read.
