1.0 Course Relevance & Objective:


Management is essential in all organized efforts, be it a business activity or any other activity.
Principles of management are now universally used not just for managing business organizations;
they are also applied to various other types of organizations, such as education, social, military
and government. Management utilizes all the physical & human resources productively.
Management provides maximum utilization of scarce resources by selecting its best possible
alternate use in industry from out of various uses. It arranges the factors of production, assembles
and organizes the resources, integrates the resources in effective manner to achieve goals. It
directs group efforts towards achievement of pre-determined goals. The main objective of this
course is to enable students understand the concepts, principles and practices of Management and
Organization Behaviour so that they can apply these in real life situations through case studies
and exercises. The course is designed to equip the students with key skills, knowledge and
competencies in various aspects of management.
2.0 Learning Outcomes of the Course:
Today’s managers need to possess leadership skills, the ability to build and manage teams, to
motivate and keep employees engaged, and to manage the interface with the customers.
Having successfully completing the course, the students will be able to:
 Understand as well as apply the concepts and principles of management
 Identify the roles and functions of managers along with understanding of organizational
structure
 Understand the concept and theories of motivation and leadership along with their
applications
 Learn group dynamics and importance of team building in management
 Develop analytical understanding of techniques used to analyze the industries and
environment

3.0 Course Contents:


Unit 1: Introduction to Management
Meaning, Nature and Functions of Management, Roles of a Manager, Managerial Skills,
Different Schools of Management Thought, Importance of Planning, Planning Process, Types
of Plans, Decision Making, Organizational structure, Centralization and Decentralization, Steps
in Control Process, Methods of Establishing Controls.

Unit 2: Motivation and Leadership


Concept and importance of Motivation, Theories of Motivation given by Maslow, Herzberg,
McGregor, McClelland and Porter – Lawler, Applications of Motivation Concept, Leadership:
Meaning & Leadership styles, theories of leadership.

Unit 3: Group Dynamics and Team building


Stages of Group Development, Team building, Importance of Teamwork, Types of Teams,
Challenges in Managing Teams

Unit 4: Strategic Management


Strategic Planning, TOWS Matrix, BCG Matrix, Porter’s Industry Analysis, PEST Analysis,
Corporate Social Responsibility

Important Note: All assignments will be marked in internals, and class behavior/performance
will also be reflected in Assignment marks. Missing an assignment will reflect as zero and poor
performance in class will also be reflected in your internals.

Rules of Class Room

 Pre-reads are a must before all class sessions.


 Assignments after the due date/time will be assessed but no marks given.
 Class will commence as per the program exactly at 09.15 am. Late comers will have to wait
till next break. Absolutely no entry unless Chitkara bus is late (in case of morning session.
 Class discussions and presentations as per schedule. No postponement accepted under any
circumstances, except organizational constraint.
 Attendance: Attendance will be taken for every session within five minutes of the start of a
session.
 Class Participation: You are expected to participate in the class discussions.
 Missed Assignments: Assignments are due on the day they are scheduled. You will receive
no marks for missed assignments and also for missed deadlines.
 During lectures, please turn off cell phones (off does not mean standby).
 Uniform: Students without college Uniform will not be allowed to attend the classes.
 Teamwork issues. Corporate professionals spend much of their professional lives working on
projects as a part of teams. All are expected to make significant contributions to these teams.
We in CBS too expect significant contributions from each student in the teamwork effort. At
the end of the sessions, I will solicit feedback from the members of each team regarding the
contributions of other team members.
