ABSTRACT

Vastu shastra is an ancient Indian science of harmony and prosperity living by

eliminating negative and enhancing positive energies around us. All the

buildings and even land on which building is erected has vibrations of energy

associated with it.Some of the energies are positive while the others are negative

on us.Vastu aims to eleminate negative and enhance positive energy present at a

place or location. In simple terms we can say that, vastu aims to make harmonious

buildings at places in tune with mother nature so that human inhabiting the

building live well balanced and happy life.Like many of India’s ancient science

and knowledge, vastu shastra also get neglected and received very less attention

over centuries.Hence, today’s fast paced society has very limited or no knowledge

of vastu and find it difficult to appreciate the benefits of vastu.

WHAT IS VASTU SHASTRA?

Vastu Shastra is an ancient science of India for planning dwellings. It has been

evolved from a story.

FIG 1

 VASTU PURUSHA – THE FASCINATING STORY

It all started when Lord Brahma (the creator of the Universe) was experimenting to

make some creatures. He created a man who was huge and had enormous powers to

grow. Soon after his creation, the man started growing.

As time passed,he became extremely huge ,his hunger increased and the situation

became worst when he had cast a permanent eclipse on the Earth. On watching

the whole scenario , Lord Brahma realised that he created a mistake. He

requested the Gods of eight directions (Astha dikapalas) to come and help him.
VASTU SHASTRA |4

Upon hearing the request ,Gods came for rescue .They grabbed the man and

overpowered him. They pinned the man against the ground with his head in North

east and legs in the south direction .During the event Lord Brahma jumped on the man

and held the man down.

Man started crying and complaining Lord Brahma as he was the one who created him

like this and what is his mistake ? , then Lord Brahma answered “It is not your fault

but you have become a threat to everyone”. I will make you immortal and when

people will build any sort of structure on earth will worship you. You can tease ,

devour and trouble these people if they do not keep you happy.

The Gods who pinned the man down along with Lord Brahma forms a part of the

section of the ground where he was pinned and came to be known as VASTU

FIVE ELEMENTS OF VASTU SHASTRA

FIG 6 FIG 7

Earth-The first and foremost element of nature which exerts maximum energy. It is

necessary to consult the land you are purchasing, as plot’s soil, area everything matters

in Vastu. The selection of site is considered very important in Vastu element. A

detailed inspection of soil, plot, site, shape and size has to be done before commencing

the construction.

Water-Water (jal) is present on earth in the form of rain, ocean, sea and rivers. It is

the second foremost element considered in Vastu. Vastu provides proper directions for

the placement of water sources. Water is an element of north-east.

Fire-Fire (Agni) is considered as an element of south-east. In a house kitchen fire or

electrical gadgets shall be place in south-east. Light is the essence of life, and sun is

the natural light giver. Fire is the basis of all sources of energy including thermal

power and atomic power.

Air-Air (vayu) is a necessary thing for all of us living on this earth. In Vastu air is

another important element which is considered before applying it. Air is an element of

north-east. Air consists of various gases on earth like oxygen, nitrogen, helium, carbon

dioxide etc. A balanced percentage of different gases, atmospheric pressure and

humidity level are important for living beings on this earth.

Space-Sky is never ending and our space is full of constellations, galaxies, star, moon,

sun and all the nine planets. It is also called universe which is known as ‘Brahamand’-

the place of god. Space has a very important place in our lives and Vastu gives

different directions for better space.

FACTORS INFLUENCING PLANNING OF A RESIDENCE

 SITE LOCATION

Peaceful and calm place with a lot of greenery and good water source is

considered as best site because fertile soil is good for construction and peace

is what everyone seeks.

 GOOD SITES

 Plot with a good history because it will give positive vibes.

 Plot with road on all the four sides is considered the best because it is not

abutting anyone’s property thus it can derive maximum lighting and

ventilation from all the four sides.

 Plots with roads on North and East so that more light and air can enter from

these sites in the morning.

 Plots with water source on North /East /Northeast are good.

FIG 9
V A S T U S H A S T R A | 11

 NOT GOOD SITES

 Avoid sites where cactus grows. - Such sites indicate sandy soil which will not

support the foundation effectively.

 Avoid sites in which there are lot of termites: – Even if anti-termite

treatment is done on the foundation, there is a every likelihood that the termites will

vanish completely

 Avoid a Plot sandwiched between larger plots: – The owner of the smaller Plot

can only construct smaller house than the owners of the larger plots and thus,

may subconsciously feel ‘small’ and overpowered with respect to the neighbours. This

can create a feeling of inferiority in the owner.

 Avoid Sites with obstructions: Don’t buy a Plot with obstructions like hills, tall

buildings or towers on the North, North-East or East sides. The Reasoning – The

useful morning sun rays will be blocked. However having such obstructions on the

West or South sides are considered good as they block the hot western rays.

 Avoid plots with an electrical pole or power supply station in the North-East
corner:

It is an obstruction and can create harmful electric waves, that can

permeate the house from the open North-East corner.

 Avoid Plots with trees: If the Plot is a small one, there should not be trees like

Peepal , Mango, Banyan, Tamarind etc on it. – These trees have far-spreading roots

and branches, which can cause damage to the building foundation. However, if the

Plot is quite big, it is good to have these trees, but away from the building and not in

the North-East corner.

 SITE SHAPE

 SQUARE SHAPE.

It is considered as best shape.”Ensure inmates all round happiness.

 RECTANGULAR SHAPE.

It is considered good especially if longer side runs north to south.

 TRIANGULAR SHAPE.

Not good. Compound wall can be made in case of big site.

 CIRCULAR /ELLIPTICAL/OVAL SHAPE

Not good.

 L SHAPE

Not good

 GOU MUKHA

 It is considered as a good site.

 After placing house at the front ,the rest of the space

I used as kitchen or outhouse at the back.

 SINHA MUKHA

 It is not considered as a good site.

 After placing the house ,the enough front space cannot be utilised as seen in
above case.
