With some 2.1 billion lacking access to safe, readily available water, one Israeli company based in
Rishon Le Tzion has set out to make drinkable H2O from air. WaterGen‘s patented technology
extracts moisture and humidity from air to generate water that is safe to drink.

Just like Hippo Insurance, WaterGen has contributed its know-how this year to assist in the rescue
and recovery efforts in the massive wildfires in Northern California. A WaterGen emergency
response vehicle (ERV) made its way to the area, carrying an atmospheric water generator known as
a “GEN-350.” “Providing the police and firefighters with the basic necessity of drinking water allows
them to serve and help for longer periods of time,” said CEO of WaterGen USA, Ed Russo.

In 2017, two of the company’s products – industrial scale Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG)
Large Scale and the highly mobile water generator Gen-350 – were donated to the American Red
Cross and FEMA to assist in the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. More recently in
November, WaterGen was selected as CES’ 2019 Best of Innovation Award and Honoree recipient for
its Genny water generator.

Lishtot: Taking water technology to the next level

Another company in the clean water technology field made the list this year. Co-founded in 2015 by
Dr. Alan Bauer and Netanel Raisch, Jerusalem-based company Lishtot, Hebrew for “to drink,” has
developed products able to effectively and rapidly detect 20 different contaminants in drinking
water – without ever touching it. The company has developed the TestDrop Pro, a keychain-like,
handheld device embedded with a sensor that, when placed in close proximity to a cup of water,
instantly determines whether water is safe to drink. The device, sold at a retail price of $49.95, blinks
blue if the water is safe and red if it’s contaminated.

The Lishtot technology platform uses electric field sensors to determine the quality of a given water
sample. The company has also developed an app, which allows users to report problems to utility
companies and search, based on location, for data about any contamination events, as well as add
videos, images, comments and access their testing history.

The startup made international headlines this year with its innovative tech, snagging first place in
January at the Startup Night competition at the CES 2018 annual conference, the largest tech and

Israeli Startup Helps Solve World Hunger

Many Israeli soldiers take the skills they were taught in the IDF and are using them to benefit of
mankind.

Case in point is an Israeli start-up called NRGene, founded by former members of the IDF’s
celebrated 8200 cyber-warfare unit.

For decades, geneticists the world over had toiled to map the genome of bread wheat. So tedious
had the effort become (the wheat genome is five times the size of the human genetic code) that
many scientists had written it off as an insurmountable task.

That’s when NRGene stepped in. Already some of the best in the world at cracking complex
computer codes, they decided to take a swing at the genetic code of wheat.

Within a matter of months, NRGene had succeeded in mapping the genome of a local variety of
wheat known as wild Emmer.

Tamera is a School and Research Station for Realistic Utopia

The project was founded in Germany in 1978. In 1995 it moved to Portugal. Today 170 people live
and work on a property of 330 acres.

The founding thought was to develop a non-violent life model for cooperation between human
being, animal and nature. Soon it became clear that the healing of love and of human community

Tiny Scottish island powers itself with community-owned off-grid energy system

When you think of the future of electricity in the world, you probably don’t envision a small island
off the coast of Scotland leading the way. But the 12-square-mile Scottish island of Eigg has become
a shining example of how communities that aren’t connected to larger grids can do it themselves
with clean energy. As the BBC reports, Eigg made the revolutionary move in 2008 to shed its noisy
diesel-generated power in favor of an off-grid electric system that uses only wind, water and solar
power. It was the first community in the world to make this bold move, and what’s more, the clearly
self-reliant residents pretty much taught themselves how to build and run the system. Since the
diesel generators they previously used only ran for a small part of each day, getting rid of them in
favor of clean energy also meant the community had power available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
for the first time.

unlikely source–the air itself. The company’s affordable, electricity-free Aqua Panels use solar
thermal energy to convert vapor into usable water – and they should be available to the public

'Staggering' clean-up of river polluted by metal mine

A pilot scheme to clean rivers polluted by abandoned metal mines has delivered "staggering" results,
environment officials have claimed.

The new technology - thought to be a world-first - removed up to 99.5% of metals which impact
water quality.

The electrochemical technique separated a metallic sludge from mine discharges leaving clean water
behind.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said it marked a potential "step change" in how the problem is
handled.
