Stress Management

Melinda is a freshman in college with a 3.0 GPA who puts a lot of energy and effort into

her studies. The issue she faces is the anxiety she experiences before each test as she has

doubts in herself and is experiencing a lot of stress. She is facing the end of her semester and is

faced with her chemistry exam which she needs to be able to pass as the stress of not means

she will lose her scholarship and the anxiety is making it difficult for her. She has already had a

panic attack leading up to her exam from the stressor of losing her scholarship if she isn’t able

to pass the exam. So now the chemistry exam is two days away and Melinda needs help with

what she should do.

My personal experience from being in college was not a good one as I started in a school

that was not helpful. Later I was faced with many problems and experienced many situations

where I felt like I wasn’t good enough or my anxiety wouldn’t let me sleep at night as I would

feel like my efforts were all for nothing. Tests were one of my biggest problems when I first

started college. They are worth so much and the stress was a lot. I struggled with second

guessing myself as well as well as giving myself nerve getters from overthinking on what might

or might not be on before the test. But then I failed a class and it sucked, but after I learned

that everyone fails. After that I focused on making that class up and focused less on the actual

test and more on the material and making sure I knew the material better. The problem I had
was I would focus on what might and might not be on the test and not so much on the material

I already knew. I don’t let the nerves get to me like before as I learned that focusing on the

unknown gets to me then knowing what I do know and what I need to work on.

If I was Melinda I would seek professional help just so that she has someone to talk to who can

help her out by giving her advice in what she has to do to manage her anxiety and advice in

better managing the anxiety she gets. As stated in the book, Understanding panic and other

anxiety disorder, “Patients are unaware of the level of stress in there lives and can benefit from

training in relaxation techniques.”. As the is other options as well as medications that can help

manage such anxiety from stressors in our lives. From a healthcare perspective I think she

should start by relaxing and have a clear mind about things. She should ask her self what she

wants and focus more time on what she knows and go in calm and relaxed as to not overthink.

As I believe finding help when needed is the right thing to do.
