§ Lessons Learned
Breathing New Life

§ In 2014, Mexico’s Energy Reform opened up market to private investment

§ More than 14 billion USD of pipeline investments expected by 2023

§ Nearly 8,000 km of pipelines in strategic markets are out of service

§ In 2016, United approached with high profile CO2 pipeline rehab project

§ 56km. CO2 pipeline system in bad shape - 10 months execution window

§ Dilemma and Opportunity – New system vs rehabilitation

The Challenge

§ Pipeline system issues

• CO2 pipeline provides feedstock to Urea plant
• Documented Leaks (air tests) in locations with difficult access
• Indications of internal and external corrosion
• ROW through environmentally sensitive areas and populated areas
• New construction would not meet 10 month execution window

§ Pipeline integrity assessment to determine Fitness for Purpose

§ Pipelines were un-piggable

§ Land access was a significant challenge

The Challenge

§ Project Specifics:
• 12 and 18 inch pipelines x 28 kilometers
• 18 kilometers of environmentally protected marsh and swamp
• 8 kilometers of populated areas
• 2 kilometers through petrochemical facility and pipe racks
• Humid CO2 transport at 400 psi pressure
• Internal and external corrosion indications

§ Rehabilitation and repair strategy required pin-point accuracy

§ Interactive Pipeline Liner – corrosion barrier + structural integrity

The Strategy

§ Tethered ILI inspection to provide exact location of anomalies

§ CIS-DCVG surveys to evaluate coating and CP system

§ Pin-point repairs with steel replacement and FRP reinforcement

§ HDPE & PA-12 pipe liner installation with leak detection features

§ New automated CP system installation

§ Hydro-testing and commissioning

Tethered Inspection

§ Technology: Tethered Hi-Res Triax Sensor MFL and Caliper tool

§ Total Length: 56 kilometers in 12 and 18 inch diameters
§ Sections: 26 sections of 2,600 – 11,500 feet in length
§ Assessment Guidelines: ASME B31G and Modified 31G

§ Data sent from the field with 24 hour data analysis turn-around
§ More than 18,000 indications with 600 indications requiring repair
§ Tethered tool pulled with skid-wireline provided high quality data

§ Pin-Point accuracy minimized land access issues

FRP Reinforcement

§ Tyfo FRP system meets ASME-PCC-2 and ISO-24817 standards

§ Fast and cost-effective solution for wall loss repairs
§ Pin-point accuracy of ILI data allowed for localized reinforcement
FRP Reinforcement
Pipeline Liner

§ Two thirds of wall loss indications due to internal corrosion

§ Humid CO2 a source of integrity concerns

§ Plastic Liner eliminates concerns

§ Interactive system complements steel strength

§ Pressurized Groove Design allows for real time leak detection

§ PA-12 liner installed in river crossing - eliminate permeation

§ Significant flow improvement expected

Pipeline Liner

Interactive Liner Gap Spanning

§ Purpose: reinforce steel pipelines in areas with localized corrosion
§ Bridge areas of reduced wall thickness assuming a worst case scenario
§ 400 psi operating pressure - interactive liner spans upto 4 inch holes
Pipeline Liner

Flow Improvement
§ Reduction in friction coefficient of liner vs bare steel = improved flow
§ Flow improvement resulted in increased flow transport capacity
§ Hazen Williams flow calculation (water) shows a 21-26% improvement
§ For gas, Darcy-Weisbach model for laminar flow showed a similar result
§ Observed system improvement from 2,200TPD to 2,710TPD = 23%
Pipeline Liner

Active Liner Monitoring

§ Purpose: Detect pinhole anomalies
§ Annular space pressure – 10 to 15 psi
§ Annular space pressure real time monitoring with wireless sensors

Lessons Learned

§ Success of project = Tethered ILI inspection + solid rehab strategy

§ 56 kilometers of pipeline put back into service in 10 months

§ Rehabilitation = utilization of key asset at a fraction of cost & time

§ Pemex Logistics has more than 874 out of commission pipelines

§ Cost effective strategy to obtain access to strategic markets

§ An observed 22% improvement in flow capacity a big bonus
