Q1. (Adaptive Modulation and Coding)

Suppose that the bit error rate (BER) performance can be approximated by
𝑃𝑃𝑏𝑏 = 0.2𝑒𝑒 −1.5𝛾𝛾𝐺𝐺𝑐𝑐 (𝑟𝑟)/(𝑀𝑀−1) , where 𝛾𝛾 is the SNR, 𝐺𝐺𝑐𝑐 (𝑟𝑟) denotes the coding gain of the coding rate
𝑟𝑟 which is given as follows

𝒓𝒓 0.25 0.5 0.75

𝑮𝑮𝒄𝒄 (𝒓𝒓)(dB) 9 8 6
−6
Given a target bit error rate (BER) of 𝑃𝑃𝑏𝑏 < 10 , consider a Gaussian channel with SNR
𝛾𝛾 = 13𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑, find the optimal coding rate 𝑟𝑟 ∈ {0.25, 0.5, 0.75} and constellation size 𝑀𝑀 ∈
{4, 16, 64} in the following options to achieve the maximum spectrum efficiency for variable-
rate M-QAM. Justify your answer by detail derivations.
A. 𝑟𝑟 = 0.75, 𝑀𝑀 = 4
B. 𝑟𝑟 = 0.75, 𝑀𝑀 = 16
C. 𝑟𝑟 = 0.5, 𝑀𝑀 = 16
D. 𝑟𝑟 = 0.25, 𝑀𝑀 = 64

Q2. (Channel Capacity) Shannon capacity gives the theoretical limit for data transmission rate
(or equivalently spectrum efficiency). Please calculate the SNR gap for the optimal AMC scheme
in Q1 to the Shannon limit.

Q3. (MIMO) Consider spatial multiplexing in a 3 × 3 MIMO system. The channel matrix is given
1 −𝑖𝑖 1 0
as 𝐇𝐇 = 1 0 1. Suppose the receiving signal vector 𝒚𝒚 = −1 and assume the channel
1 −𝑖𝑖 0 −1
1
noise vector can be estimated by 𝒏𝒏 = −𝑖𝑖 . Please calculate the transmitted signal vector 𝒙𝒙.
𝑖𝑖
(hint: 𝒚𝒚 = 𝐇𝐇𝐇𝐇 + 𝒏𝒏)

Q4. (OFDM) Which of the following statements is not true about OFDM?
A. The cyclic prefix can help avoid the inter symbol interference (ICI).
B. Frequency selective fading can be efficiently resolved by OFDM.
C. Sub-channels of OFDM can be overlapped to support higher data rate.
D. The Peak to average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM is better than traditional FDM.

Q5. (OFDM) In 802.11ac, a channel of 20MHz is split into 64 subcarriers, out of which 56
subcarriers are used, i.e., 52 subcarriers are used for data transmissions and the other 4 are for
pilot. Please calculate 1) the bandwidth for each subcarrier; 2) the theoretical bound of data
rate when 256-QAM with a coding rate of 3/4 is used, and guard interval is 800ns.
Q6. (Fading) Consider a base station with transmission power 10dB at frequency F=900MHz and
a mobile user located 50m away.

(1) Using the free-space path loss model, calculate the received power𝑃𝑃𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟 at the mobile user.
(hint: path loss in dB is calculated as 𝐿𝐿 = 20𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙10 (𝑓𝑓 𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀) + 20𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙10 (𝑑𝑑 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘) + 32.45)
(2)* Consider Rayleigh fading at the mobile user. Now, the random received power over
1
Rayleigh fading is exponentially distributed, i.e. 𝑃𝑃(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑃𝑃 𝑒𝑒 −𝑥𝑥/𝑃𝑃𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟 , 𝑥𝑥 > 0, where 𝑃𝑃𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟 is the
𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟
power after path loss. Calculate the outage probability that the random received power is
below -30dbm.
(Hint: ∫ 𝑒𝑒 −𝑥𝑥 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 = −𝑒𝑒 −𝑥𝑥 + 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐.)
