Kentucky Violent Death Reporting System (KY-VDRS) Lexington, KY
Data Abstractor Fall 2016-Fall 2018
 Abstracted over 2,000 violent death cases per year using data obtained from over five different types of death records and entered
cases into the national surveillance system in order to analyze trends and help assist the state in designing and implementing
prevention and intervention efforts
o Main records included coroner reports, medical examiner reports, toxicology reports, law enforcement reports, and
death certificates
 Implemented the use of the Coroner Investigation Reporting System (CIRS) to encourage a secure, uniform database for all
county coroners to easily send and access data
 Contributed to monthly conference calls with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other funded states to
discuss various coding issues in particularly difficult or unusual cases
 Traveled to 16 coroner trainings a year across KY in order to connect with data providers and abstract data/cases in person that
may have been unable to reach us through the bi-annual mailing
 Designed and created detailed 120 county infographics for each county coroner in KY based on each county’s specific statistics
on violent deaths over the last ten years in order to give back to data providers with a visual aid of what has been occurring in
their county so they can apply for funding/grants in their county with data to back up applications
 Designed logo for KY-VDRS to be used on future reports, mailings, etc.
 Created tables showing violent death demographics on veterans in KY for the Lieutenant Governor and the Commissioner of
Veteran Affairs
