Rationale for Standard 3: Learning Environments
Artifact name: Morning meeting greetings
Standard:
The teacher works with learners to create environments that support individual and
collaborative learning, encouraging positive social interaction, active engagement in learning,
and self motivation.
What the Standard means to me:
The environment in which a student is learning is essential to their growth. It is crucial that the
teacher sets up an environment that encourages communication, motivation, sharing of ideas,
and collaborative learning.
Indicator:
3 (h) Intentionally builds learner capacity to collaborate in facetoface and virtual
environments through applying effective interpersonal communication skills.
Description of the artifact:
During my time student teaching, we changed the morning meeting greeting weekly. Each
week a new greeting would be added to our list, and on Fridays, the helper got to select which
greeting they wanted to do. I compiled a list of all of the greetings we did while I was in the
classroom to show just how much we are interacting as a class, and how important it is to have
that positive interaction first thing in the morning.
Rationale:
Morning meeting is so important when establishing a positive classroom environment.
Allowing the students to greet each other in a proper way each morning really helps them start
their day in a positive way. Students need that facetoface contact, and they need to learn
those communication skills in order to strive in real world situations. A quick morning
greeting is going to prepare them in so many ways that they are not even aware of, and it also
shows them how important it is to respect each other and say good morning in a positive way.
Each greeting involved saying good morning and the person name. This shows the student that
each person in the classroom is valued and has their own name because they are their own
individual. By doing morning meeting greetings, we are getting facetoface contact and we
are working on our communication skills daily, but also changing it up weekly.
