Rationale for Standard 1: Learner Development
Artifact name: Contextual Factor Analysis
Standard:
The teacher understands how students learn and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning
and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social,
emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and
challenging learning experiences.
What the Standard means to me:
Learners grow at different times and at different paces. It is up to me as an educator to
recognize what is affecting each students growth in the classroom, rather it is cognitive,
linguistic, social, emotional, or physical, it is my job to know my learners and create
instruction based off my learner's needs.
Indicator:
1(e) Understands that each learner’s cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical
development influences learning and knows how to make instructional decisions that build on
learners’ strengths and needs.
Description of the artifact:
My contextual factor analysis played a big role in me getting to know the students, their
surroundings, and what I was going to do to ensure they are getting the instruction that they
need. I had to do a lot of research for this artifact which included, me researching the school,
community, classroom, and individual students. I had to research and take into consideration
all of the different factors that affect the learners in my classroom. After the researching part, I
had to think about what this meant to me. I needed to decide what was I going to do in order to
ensure I was meeting the needs of each individual in my classroom.
Rationale:
During the research project and thinking about what all of this information meant to me, I was
able to gain a deeper understanding of each learner in my classroom. I was able to recognize
all of the different factors that affect the learners in my classroom. In my artifact, I talk about
how the walking tickets that my school uses makes a big difference in the students afternoon
learning. Instead of keeping students in for recess they are allowed to go out and walk, so they
are getting the fresh air and exercise that they need. I indicate how this is going to ensure they
are ready for the afternoon learning. I also talk about how a child cannot learn if they are
hungry, so luckily the school offers, breakfast, snack, and lunch. Lastly, I conducted an interest
survey on each student which involved a oneonone interview so that I could get to know each
individual better. I asked questions that would help me figure out how they learn best or what
subjects they are most interested in, but I also asked questions about them as a person because
I recognize that they are more than just a student. This artifact shows I am proficient in this
standard and indicator because I understand that each learner goes through different
developmental challenges at different times, I research and talk to the learners to narrow down
where they are at, and then I think about the type of instruction I will be implementing based
on what I have learned thus far.
