Objective:

a) To determine the CO2 consumption and the quantity of CO2 bottles required for vent snuffing.

Basis/Assumptions:

a) A remote CO2 snuffing system is provided on Yetagun North wellhead platform as mitigation in case of accidental ignition of the vent gas.

b) PTS 80.45.10.10 calls for snuffing facilities to be sized to extinguish the stack at least three ( 3 ) times in succession
when it is burning, and discharging at a rate corresponding to one percent of the maximum vent rate.

c) The maximum vent rate used 74 MMscfd (approx 108463 kg/hr) gas same as vent boom design case.

d) Snuffing duration is considered to be 10 minutes for each snuffing.

e) Mass weight of CO2 bottle is assumed to be 50 kg per bottle.

Calculation:

a) Estimated maximum vent rate = 109212.4 kg / hr

b) CO2 discharge rate at 1% vent rate = 1092.124 kg / hr

c) Assumed snuffing duration = 10 minutes

d) CO2 mass consumed per snuff = 1092.12 kg 1 hr 10 minutes

hr 60 minutes

= 182.02 kg

e) CO2 mass consumed for 3 snuffings = 182.02 kg x 3

= 546.062 kg

e) CO2 bottles required for snuffing during fire case = 546.06 kg

50

= 10.92124 bottles Based on 50kg of CO2 per bottle

≈ 11

Result/Conclusion

11 bottle of CO2 with mass of 50 kg is sufficient for the vent snuffing purposes.

11 of total bottle used for sparing

NOTE
1. As per vendor's (OAKWELL) calculations, No. of bottles required to stack fire 3 times in succession is 12 (45kg each).
