Beyond Walls Go Online!

There are different ways that genres may be categorized. The categorization may be based
on how the content is presented, or what the intention of the content is, or other specificities
that may depend on who makes the categories. For this activity, you are to do a research of
the known or more common genre types under these media. You may consult books on
media and communication or check reliable Internet sources to do the activity:

o News writing (Journalistic Genres)

A social news - website is an Internet website that features user-posted stories.

Source/s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_news_website
Community journalism - is locally-oriented, professional news coverage that typically
focuses on city neighborhoods, individual suburbs or small towns, rather than
metropolitan, state, national or world news.
Source/s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_journalism
Enterprise journalism - is reporting that is not generated by news or a press release,
but rather generated by a reporter or news organization based on developed sources.

o Tv entertainment programs

Wildlife programme - a programme showing how animals live

Reality show - a show with ordinary people, showing what they do in strange
situations, e.g. Big Brother
Costume drama- a TV series which is set in the past
Soap opera - a story about the lives and problems of a group of people which is
broadcast every day or several times a week on television or radio.

o Literary writing
Fiction - is a deliberately fabricated account of something. It can also be a literary
work based on imagination rather than on fact, like a novel or short story. The Latin
word fictus means “to form,” which seems like a good source for the English word
fiction, since fiction is formed in the imagination.
Manuscript - manuscript is a handwritten or typed document, especially a writer's
first version of a book before it is published.
Prose - Prose is the type of literature read most often in English classrooms. Any
novel or short story falls into this category, from Jane Eyre to Twilight and from “A
Sound of Thunder” to “The Crucible.” Like poetry, prose is broken down into a large
number of other sub-genres. Some of these genres revolve around the structure of
the text, such as novellas, biographies, and memoirs, and others are based on the
subject matter, like romances, fantasies, and mysteries.
Drama - Any text meant to be performed rather than read can be considered drama
(unless it’s a poem meant to be performed, of course). In layman’s terms, dramas are
usually called plays. When written down the bulk of a drama is dialogue, with
periodic stage directions such as “he looks away angrily.” Of all the genres of
literature discussed in this article, drama is the one given the least time in most
classrooms

o Tv News
Television news - refers to disseminating current events via the medium of television. A
"news bulletin" or a "newscast" are television programs lasting from seconds to hours that
provide updates on international, national, regional, and/or local news events.
Radio news- is similar to television news, but is transmitted through the medium of the
radio instead. It is based on the audio aspect rather than the visual aspect. Sound bites are
captured through various reporters (generally through audio capture devices such as tape
recorders) and played back through the radio. News updates occur more often on radio
than on television – usually about once or twice an hour.

o Film Genres

Comedies- are light-hearted plots consistently and deliberately designed to amuse

and provoke laughter
Action films- usually include high energy, big-budget physical stunts and chases,
possibly with rescues, battles, fights, escapes, destructive crises (floods, explosions,
natural disasters, fires, etc.), non-stop motion, spectacular rhythm and pacing, and
adventurous, often two-dimensional 'good-guy' heroes (or recently, heroines)
battling 'bad guys' - all designed for pure audience escapism.
Drama - is a genre of narrative fiction (or semi-fiction) intended to be more serious
than humorous in tone.[1]Drama of this kind is usually qualified with additional terms
that specify its particular subgenre, such as "police crime drama", "political drama",
"legal drama", "historical period drama", "domestic drama", or "comedy-drama".
1. Why is media content categorized into genres?
-So that people may easily know what type of film they wanted to watch and also for
them to know if it is appropriate or not.

2. What makes the genres effective in characterizing media messages?

-It plays a big role specially in characterizing, because it differentiates the genres so
that the purposes will not affect each one of them and will be emphasize the
messages of different media content genres.

3. How genres helpful in differentiating the apparent from the hidden motives of media
content/messages?
-It separates the different media content so that the motives of media content will be
emphasized. Also it can help to the people to pick what are they prepared genres.
