Abstract

In recent years, radio frequency identification technology has moved from


obscurity into mainstream applications that help speed the handling of
manufactured goods and materials. RFID enables identification from a
distance, and unlike earlier bar-code technology, it does so without
requiring a line of sight. In this paper, the author introduces the principles of
RFID, discusses its primary technologies and applications, and reviews the
challenges organizations will face in deploying this technology. In the
modern era, great developments have been done; which are based on
Radio Frequency Identification Techniques. The applications are effectively
applied to various diverse areas as transportation, agriculture, hospital /
health care and other industries. RFID technique facilitates use automatic
wireless identification through electronic passive and active tags with
suitable readers. This paper illustrates a physical system which
incorporates an application of RFID and wireless data base record entries.
Our proposed system not only eliminates the time consumed in manual
attendance but also maintains the record of entries which can be used for
statistical purposes like allocation of appropriate attendance score and
further administrative tasks.
CHAPTER 1

Introduction

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification and is a term that

describes a system of identification. RFID is based on storing and remotely

retrieving information or data as it consists of RFID tag, RFID reader and

backend Database. RFID tags stores unique identification information of

objects and communicate the tags so as to allow remote retrieval of their

ID. RFID technology depends on the communication between the RFID

tags and RFID readers. The range of the reader is dependent upon its

operational frequency. Usually the readers have their own software running

on their ROM and also, it communicates with other software to manipulate

these unique identified tags. Basically, the application which manipulates

the tag deduction information for the end user communicates with the RFID

reader to get the tag information through antennas. Many researchers have

addressed the issues that are related to RFID reliability and capability.

RFID is becoming more popular because it increases the efficiency and it

provides better service to stakeholders. RFID technology has been realized

as a performance differentiator for a variety of commercial applications, but

its capability is yet to be fully utilised.


RFID tags, or simply "tags", are small transponders that respond to

queries from a reader by wirelessly transmitting a serial number or similar

identifier. They are heavily used to track items in production environments

and to label items in supermarkets. They are usually thought of as an

advanced barcode. However, their possible area of use is much larger.

This paper presents a few new applications that are possible using RFID

technology such as locating lost items, tracking moving objects, and others.

RFID tags are expected to proliferate into the billions over the next few

years and yet, they are simply treated the same way as barcodes without

considering the impact that this advanced technology has on privacy. This

paper presents possible exploits of RFID systems and some proposed

solutions as well.

Nowadays, there are lots of universities around our country and

each of the university consists of student up to 10 thousand. To handle a

large amount of student may be problem especially to get the attendance.

Now, process to get attendance in majority universities still used the

manual process. The manual process means that when start the

class/lecture, lecturer will give a piece of attendance paper and students

will check their name and then will sign on it. At the end of class, lecturer

will take back the attendance paper and keep it as a record. Normally, the
attendance paper need much time to sign by all students especially for

class with a lot of student. Students also forget to sign that attendance and

they were assuming absent that class. The problem also will happen when

lecturer forget to bring the attendance paper to class. Students need to

write their name on a piece of paper and sometimes student will take

change to cheat in process getting the attendance. The suitable solution for

this problem is by design a system that will record attendance

automatically. In this project, RFID system used to record student

attendance automatically. This project will used student ID card as RFID

tag and a RFID reader. This RFID system will be integrate with software.

This method is more effective to prevent problem in process getting

attendance manually.
Significance of the study:

This study will be valuable and significant to students, parents,

readers, future researchers and school.

Students; This study will help them to have more time in studying

rather than making fun with friends. This study will also help them

understand the effects of time management while studying.

Parents; This study will help them to know what time their children

came and go out from school. This will also help them to know the school

activities that their children belong.

Teachers; This study will enable to have communication with parents

of his/her student during class hours.

Readers; This study will help the readers to have understanding

about RFID, and its benefits to community.

Future Researchers; this may serve as basis for future research that

they will conduct.


Statement of the Problem

The study is intended to show the benefits of installation of RFID’s at

random senior high school here in Batangas City.

1. What are the benefits of RFID in senior high school students?

2. In what instances, it can be helpful and beneficiary to parents as

well as to the students?

3. How RFID works?

Scope and Delimitations:

This study was mainly concerned and limited only with the installation

of RFID’s at senior high schools at Batangas City area. The staffs of school

were not included because they are not suitable for the observations

regarding the benefits of the RFIDs.

The data gathering procedure was conducted from December 2017

to January 2018. Questionnaires will be used in data gathering instruments.


Conceptual Framework of the Study

Research indicates that there are many issues among the random Senior

High school students in Batangas City went to their home late because of,

as they’ve said was their projects and duties at school. Studies have been

conducted assessing the effectiveness of time keeping of parents by the

use of RFID’s. As an input, the researchers will gather information about

the effectiveness of installation of RFID for high school students.

Hypothesis:

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is regarded as a promising

technology for the optimization of supply chain processes since it improves

manufacturing and retail operations from forecasting demand to planning,

managing inventory, and distribution. This study uses a simulation model to

calculate the expected benefits of an integrated RFID system on a three-

echelon supply chain obtained through performance increases in efficiency,

accuracy, visibility, and security level. The study investigates how the

product value, lead time, and demand uncertainty affect the performance of

the integrated RFID supply chain in terms of cost factors at the echelon

level.
Objectives:

The main objectives of this research are:

1. To study on data transfer between RFID system and Visual Basic 6

The data that was read by RFID reader will communicate with

interface on Visual Basic 6 for display and to compare with database.

2. To develop graphical user interface (GUI) using Visual Basic 6 that

will integrate with RFID system to capture and record student

attendance the main objective is to developed student attendance

with RFID system. We need to build interface that will integrate with

RFID system and will show the card code. Another interface also

need to capture and record student attendance.


CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY

There are varieties of related studies and literature which the

proponents have carefully studied in order to nurture themselves with the

precise concept in accomplishing their project. They believe that it will help

them in micro filtering the details that they need to come up with what can

be the most efficient and effective online examination program based on

the recent structure and set-up of languages and concepts there may be

available. The initial research was studying books and journal where the

team found concepts or ideas regarding to their proposal. The principles

given in several literature gathered were carefully studied as it is

essential in accomplishing projects.

Foreign Literature

middleware technologies for business applications.

RFID Tags and Reader

RFID Tags can have diverse storage capabilities starting


at few bits

And going up to several megabytes. Furthermore , more can


distinguish between

read-only and rewritable tags, according to the properties of their


memory. In

addition, tags vary in their types of construction. That is, they can
be built to be

reusable, designed for single use, shielded against heat, manufactured for
application
on certain surfaces, or tailored to other application – specific
conditions.

Regarding the communication frequency. RFID tags are usually


categorized into low-

Frequency (LF), high- frequency (HF), or ultra-high-frequency (UHF)


transponders. LF

tags typically operate on frequencies around 125 kHz and have


communication ranges

that are commonly below 0.5 m. HF tags operate on the frequency of


13.56 MHz and

typically reach communication ranges of 0.5 to approximately 1 m.


Both, LF and HF

tags use inductive coupling for communication. By contrast, UHF tags


operate using

backscattering and reach ranges of up to approximately 7 m. UHF tags


operate in a

frequency range between 860 and 960 MHz .

RFID Middleware

A range of software system use RFID technology for


data capturing.

Examples include software solution for warehouse management, asset


tracking, or

supply chain management . Typically, these software solutions do not


directly access

RFID readers but use RFID middleware as intermediate layer.


RFID Middleware is a software for integrating RFID data with
higher level

applications. Middleware abstract the access to RFID reader from different


vendor and

pre-processes RFID data before passing them on the other applications.


Commonly, a

system architecture with RFID middleware is structured in four layers. We


refer to these

layers as device layer, enrichment layer, and application layer.

According to George Roussos (2011), Networked RFID:


System, Software

and Services. Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID as it is commonly


known, is an

umbrella term that refers to several information and communication


technologies that

share the capability to automatically identify objects, locations, and


individuals to

computing systems without any need for manual intervention. The RF


part in RFID

in particular points to the fact that this capability is enabled by wireless


communication

between the computing system and the item identified. This modus
operandi also

implies that RFID operation is imperceptible to the human senses, a


fact that has
considerable implications for users of RFID technology terms of
security and privacy

protection . With RFID, automatic identification takes a very specific


form: the object,

location, or individual is marked with a unique identifier code contained


within an RFID

tag, which is in some way attached to or embedded in the target

Synthesis

Complex hardware-software radio frequency identication (RFID) systems


are commonly utilized in many different areas of economy and everyday
life. Their frequent use results from the increasing demands for data
security or information reliability that are transferred together with goods,
between different places in the age of globalization. Furthermore, in the
modern world, there is a trend towards designing more sophisticated
electronic devices that have the ability to personalize themselves to a given
automated process. A typical RFID system consists of a read/write device
(RWD), its antenna and at least one transponder that is in-tended for
marking an object. Communication in this system can be provided with one
or simultaneously with multiple transponders (single or anti-collision system
respectively) that can also be found in static or dynamic state (moving
objects). The electromagnetic held is the source of energy for Trans-
ponders and a medium for data transmission. These factors significantly
affect the interrogation zone (IZ) of the RFID system. The IZ determines the
efficiency of a given automated process and it is shaped by the RWD
antenna.The micro strip antenna with omnidirectional radiation pattern is
presented in this paper. The proposed solution is resistant to objects
proximity that can derange its parameters. Therefore it can be integrated
with greater number of different read/write devices, e.g. with the mobile
(handheld) proximity-range (PR) or the medium range (MR) RWD. The
main aim for the future is to use this construction in a long range (LR)
phased array antenna (the idea of such an antenna system and exemplary
implementation is presented in ) that is anticipated to enable the IZ size to
be extended in the case of RFID system. All steps of the omnidirectional
antenna synthesis process is discussed in the research work, starting from
design criteria identi cation, through construction description of the
proposed antenna that could be manufactured in PCB (Printed Circuit
Board) techno-logy, to elaboration and verification of the numerical model
in the Mentor Graphics HyperLynx 3D EM (HL3DEM) program. The results
of calculations and measurements for the prepared samples were
discussed in the last part of the article
Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, we discuss the research design, area of study, population,

sample of the population, sampling technique, and instrument for data

collection, validation of the questionnaire, administration of the instrument

and method of data analysis.

3.1 RESEARCH DESIGN

The researcher chose a survey research design because it best

served to answer the questions and the purposes of the study. The

survey research is one in which a group of people or items is

studied by collecting and analyzing data from only a few people or

items considered to be representative of the entire group. In other

words, only a part of the population is studied, and findings from

this are expected to be generalized to the entire population

(Nworgu 1991:68). Similary, McBurney (1994:170) defines the

survey assessing public opinion or individual characteristics by the

use of questionnaire and sampling methods.


3.2 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

In this study, the options, perceptions and attitudes of teachers,

students and parents that experiencing RFID as well as the

population of Senior High School student at random schools here

in Batangas City.

3.3 POPULATION OF THE STUDY

The target population for this research defined to include the

selected students and parents of random schools and universities

here in Batangas City while the accessible population is the

teachers, students and some parents of University of Batangas. In

this study, the accessible population comprised selected Senior

High School.

3.4 SAMPLE OF THE POPULATION

For some studies, the population may be small enough to warrant

the inclusion of all of them in the study. But a study may entail a

large population which cannot all be studied. That portion of the

population that is studied is called a sample of the population

(Nworgu 1991:69). A sample in this study is, therefore, a smaller

group 3 - 4 of elements drawn through a definite procedure from


an accessible population. The elements making up this sample are

those that are actually studied. The sample of the population of

this study stood at 60 random students from different schools.

3.5 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

A stratified random sampling procedure was used for selecting the

participants in this study. This technique was employed to ensure

a fairly equal representation of the variables for the study. Within

each section, selection of staff was by simple random sampling.

This was achieved by writing out the names of the staff in piece of

paper which was folded and put in a basket. After thorough

reshuffling, the researcher selects an element, records it and puts

it back in the basket until the required number is obtained. That is,

researcher applied sampling with replacement. Proportionate

stratified random sampling technique was employed to select 60

students from different schools.


3.6 INSTRUMENT FOR DATA COLLECTION

The researcher designed an interview schedule as one of the data

collection instrument for this study. The teachers of different

schools were interviewed. The interview questions (see Appendix

VI) were aimed at eliciting relevant information concerning RFID

used as attendance system.


Results and Discussions

1. Have you heard about RFID?

93.34% of the 60 respondents answered YES. That means 56 out of

60 respondents listened and are familiar to the RFID system and to

our discussion. While 6.66% answered NO. Four of the respondents

may misunderstand the question and another reason may be that the

students were not aware or not paying attention to our presentation.

2 Do you think it is effective for student’s attendance system?

The results are just the same with the first question. 93.34% of the

respondents agreed that it is effective for the student’s attendance

system and 6.66% disagreed.

3 Would you agree if your school will install RFID as your attendance

system? Why or why not?

85% agreed if ever their school might install an RFID System for the

students attendance system. 51 out of 60 students responded yes,

while 9 of them or 15% disagreed. The 51 students saw that it is

effective and it will help them to be secured and their parents will feel

secure if it will be installed. Some answered that it will help them in

avoiding the blame of their school officials due to other student’s


behaviour. The other 9 students answered no, due to their reason

that it may increase their tuition fees.

4 In your own opinion, what would be the benefits of RFID to you and to

your school?

93.33% of them answered positively in other words, 56 out of 60

answered positively. They answered that the benefits of it will be, it

will help them in managing their time and be responsible enough.

Some said that it will help the school to be aware of their attendance

etc., four respondents/ 6.67% answered negatively and their reason

was they don’t find it helpful for them.

5. Do you think that your parents would be glad to know your school

attendance?

58 students thought that their parents would be glad to know their

attendance. That means 96.67% of the 60 students agreed and

3.33% or 2 students answered no.

6. Would it arrange the students to go home right after their classes?

54 students or 90% answered yes to question while 6 students or

10% answered No.


7. Do you think that it will help you from making your school

attendance secure?

57 out of 60 students answered yes and 3 out of 3 answered no.

8. Do you think that it will help the school to know what time you went

in and out?

58 students or 96.67% thought that it will give a lot of help to the

school in securing their students and 2 or 3.33% answered no.

9. In some circumstances, do you think that RFID can provide your

accurate attendance as a proof that you went to school?

50 out of 60 students or 83.33% answered yes while 10 students or

16.67% thought that it will not affect or it will not help the students in

providing their accurate attendance.

10. Would you recommend the installation of RFID as their

attendance system also to other school? Why or why not?

90% or 54 students would like to recommend of having RFID system

as other’s school’s attendance system because they thought that it

will be a great help. On the other hand, 10% or 6 students didn’t like

the idea of having an RFID.

Conclusion and Direction for future use:

Attendance needs to be taken at various places including colleges, school

for students and in the industries for the login logout time of employees.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based attendance management

system can be used in any college or university or company. Main objective

of RFID based Attendance System project is to take the attendance of

students or employees. The existing attendance system is manual and it is

taken on paper and it consumes lot of time. As we aware that many

traditional “Attendance system” uses attendance register to note down the

attendance. It has less accuracy. Also the administrative person needs to

maintain the attendance papers / sheets. In many industries attendance

register is used to note down the attendance of their employees. In school

attendance is taken on roll call musters and in colleges attendance is taken

by respective professors. Problem with existing attendance system is that

wrong attendance can be entered. For example, in an industry, employee

can enter invalid/incorrect login logout time. They can come at 10am and

can enter time as 8 am. Also in colleges one student can give proxy

attendance of another student. Probability of this is very less but it does

happen.
To avoid all such problems, we have implemented automated

attendance system which utilizes RFID cards. Thus it is a RFID based

attendance system. In this system each user, student or employee will

have a RFID card. And RFID reader will be placed on the door or the entry

gate of the company or on the door of the classroom or school. Whenever

employee wants to enter in the office; he/she has to show the RFID card to

the reader. He/she has to take the RFID card near to the RFID reader.

Then the RFID reader will note down the RFID card number and the time at

which the employees / student has logged in. And in the same manner

while leaving employee/student has to show the card. So the exit time will

be noted

In conclusion, the objective to build an RFID based attendance

system was successfully achieved. In terms of performance and efficiency,

this project has provided a convenient method of attendance marking

compared to the traditional method of attendance system. By using

databases, the data is more organized. This system is also a user friendly

system as data manipulation and retrieval can be done via the interface,

making it a universal attendance system. Thus, it can be implemented in

either an academic institution or in organizations.


Direction for future use:

• RFID can inform the parents about their time in and out.

• RFID can help the student’s attendance be accurate.

• RFID can help the teachers and the parents in monitoring their
attendances.

• RFID can help students to be more responsible in handling their


attendance.

• RFID can develop time management and sense of responsibility to


the students.
