ENGR 248

Engineering Graphics and 3D Modeling

Winter 2019
Final Exam / Project

Due:
March 20st (Wednesday) at 11:59pm (before midnight)

1
Bicycle Design Challenge

2
Bicycle Design Challenge
• Your are asked to design a concept bicycle as a team
• Each team will be composed of 4-5 people
• You will have the full control of your final product from
sketching to modeling
• As a team, you will:
• Generate concept sketches, a refined sketch, and a product logo
• Complete a SWOT analysis
• Build 3D parts
• Create the bicycle assembly and exploded views
• Include a photorealistic rendering of the final assembly
• Make a short video that include your product pitch
3
• Your bicycle design is something that does not require
extreme technology research and development.
• No crazy futuristic high-tech technology here!
• For example:
• No jet propulsion
• No flying bicycles
• No brain-controlled interfaces
• No magnetic levitation
• No autonomous/self-cycling bicycles
• .....

• Your bicycle must address a realistic market or
population:
• No tiny bicycles
• No giant bicycles
• Not something that is 100 years old
• Stay away from impractical design ideas

• Urban
• Performance
• Mountain
• Touring
• Endurance
• Commuter
• ....etc.

• Any niche ideas?
• Super-lightweight
• Aerodynamic
• Sustainable
• Flexible storage
• For elderly
• ...etc.

• I’m not looking for production ready bicycles!
• This is a design project with the goal of generating concepts
for a specific market
• Your overall bicycle form is important, not the details about
manufacturing or inner mechanics of the components
• Your concept design should not have all the details but
communicate your overall design ideas clearly

• I’m not looking for production ready bicycle!
• You’re generating a digital concept!
• Your concept design should not have all the details but communicate your
design ideas
• I do not look for:
• Cabling
• Brake assemblies
• Chains and chain rings
• Valves
• Functional hydraulic and pneumatic shock absorber assemblies
• Springs
• Actuators
• Details on electrical components and power delivery
• Tire threads
• Ball bearings
• Drivetrains
• Gear cassettes
• Gear derailleurs
• Actual details on connections (e.g., screws, sockets, grooves, clips...etc.)

• For example:
• You can use simple cylindrical pins or tubes to represent how axels, pedals, forks,
and cogsets are connected to the frame
• You can use a cylinder with larger diameter for gear hub, cassettes...etc.
• For parts that are welded, you don’t need to show welding spots – just solid
model parts without welding spots 10

19
DELIVERABLE #1
Page Format
Section - I

20
Page Format
Section – I
Brainstorming Session:

1. Draw 12 different bicycles in side view. You are encouraged to use your own
artistic and engineering intuition. Your sketches are rough and rapid drawings. You
are required to clearly communicate your design decisions/ideas.
2. If two designs are very similar in the rough sketch, please put a note next to them
to specify the difference.

3. Introduce at least two accessories for your bicycle.

4. Only sketch four bicycles per page.

5. Identify your preferred design (out of 12 sketches) with a star mark.

Use blank white paper in landscape orientation.

Only draw on one side.
21
Page Format
Section – I
Refining Design:
1. Provide a final/refined sketch in side view of your preferred bicycle
design.
2. You do need to include accessories in your refined sketches.
3. You must pay particular attention to detail including but not limited to:
color, reflections and textures. Sloppy drawings are not appropriate and
will result in a significant loss of points! You can use combination of pens
and pencils with different colors.

Use blank white paper in landscape orientation.

Only draw on one side.
22
Page Format
Section – I

SWOT Analysis:

1. Using your preferred design, provide Strength, Weaknesses ,

Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis of your selection.

2. Provide rationale/criticism about how you chose that overall bicycle

design and two accessories. Your write-up must contain around 250
words and clearly describes main features of you product.

Your criticism write-up must be typed, no hand-writing!

Use blank white paper in landscape orientation.
One page only.
23
Page Format
Section – I

Orthographic Projections:

1. Draw (hand-sketch) orthographic projections (Top, Front and Side)

2. Include height, width and depth of your bicycle design. You only need
to provide extreme dimensions;
> Highest height, longest length and widest width.

Use blank white paper (not orthographic grid paper) in landscape orientation.
Only draw on one side.

24
Page Format
Section – I

Product Pitch and Logo:

1. Draw (hand-sketch) your team logo. Your team logo is associated with
your bicycle company. Come up with a logo that represents your
company’s design vision.

2. Explain your company’s design vision briefly and how your preferred
design and accessories fit into your company goals. This is your sales
pitch and must reflect why someone should buy this particular bicycle
from your company (use around 250 words).

Your write-up must be typed, no hand-writing!

Use blank white paper in landscape orientation.
Only draw on one side.
25
DELIVERABLE #1
Page Format
Section - II

26
Page Format
Part – II
Engineering Drawings and Model View (Isometric + Shaded):

1. Provide orthographic projections (top, right and side) and model view
(isometric shaded) for each component that you modelled.

2. Your engineering drawings must include all dimensions associated

with the component.

3. In my bicycle design example (pg. 17), I used 19 parts. If that was your
design; then, you need at least 19 engineering drawings; one for each
component (19 bicycle components).
Your dimensions must be clear to read, no overlapping values.
Use one page, front only.
27
Page Format
Section – II

Assembly with Bill of Material:

1. From components that you modelled, build an assembly of your

bicycle.

2. Create a Bill of Material (BOM) that includes:

• Part name
• Material used
• Quantity

Screen capture of Isometric View and include it in your portfolio.

Use one page, front only.

28
Page Format
Section – II

Exploded Assembly View:

1. Create an exploded view of your assembly. It is up to your team which

axis of translation(s) and rotation(s) to use to develop your exploded
assembly view.

2. You are not required but encouraged to create exploded line views for
additional clarity.

Screen capture an Isometric View of your exploded view and include it in

your portfolio.
Use one page, front only.
29
Page Format
Section – II

Photorealistic Rendering:

1. Create a photorealistic rendering of your assembly including your

choice of materials, lights, cameras and background.

2. Use your artistic and engineering judgment to match your assembly

to your final/refined hand sketch (in Section – I) as closely as possible.

3. Refer to your photorealistic rendering slides and research tutorials for

additional guidance on how to setup your rendering scene.

Save and/or screen shot your rendering and paste it on a landscape orientation.
Use one page, front only.
30
