This activity is a great an easy one. There are very few elements that would need to be altered. First the projects will be done in group which is a great way to differentiate in the classroom as it helps lower level people get necessary help from their peers in a low stress environment leading them to succeed. The project also includes a lot of visual and audio elements that can help with EL students. There is not much writing or reading involved for this project besides the students having read the book which will be done together as a class and writing the questions and answers will be more conversational language making it easier for EL students. Lesson idea implementation: In this lesson students will be instructed to make a video in pairs or groups of 4 where they interview characters from the book, we are reding in class. One student will be the interviewers and the other student/s will be the book character. As a group they will come up with relevant questions and responses that relate back to key concepts of the novel. This will allow the students to put themselves in the shoes of the book characters and get a deeper analysis of their character and motives and how they relate back to the theme. The video they produce should intro and closing music as well as include pictures in it whether it be at the beginning and end or throughout the video itself. This fully allows them to explore the technology and create a well-rounded video. They will be graded on the content of the video and the technicalities of it as well. Importance of technology: I feel by having the students create a video of the interview rather than just writing it out really helps to immerse themselves in the content of the book. I also feel the students will have way more fun getting to act in, direct, and produce a video. They have the opportunity to use props or costume in their video and just really have fun with it. It makes for a much more fun project and the students then get to publish and share their work which enhances their overall learning and experience. Spring 2018_SJB MultiMedia Tools
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
Obviously, there are some issues that could arise during this project. While I want the students to create their own video, I do want them to include images and music in their project which could result in copyright issues. I think the best way to go about it is to provide a list of resources students have constant access to during the process. This resource list can have links to websites with copyright free images and music and also have links to websites where they can create their own music and images to use. Having students only use the resources off the list also gives them a lot more safety on the internet as they won’t be just googling for images and music. The environment they will be in while on the internet will be controlled as they can only use sources off the list and all the resources will be fully screen to make sure they are 100% appropriate for the students. When it comes to student privacy regarding the posting of the videos, they will only be posted either to a password protected classroom blog or to a school provided webpage (like D2L) This will ensure that any of the material the students post will only be accessible to those within the class. Providing the students work with an ample amount of security so their privacy is not violated. Reflective Practice: This project is top be used as an end of a unit assessment in replace of a traditional test. It gives students a way to show they read and understood characters and plot points in the book in a fun and creative way. Since this is a project that they will present to the whole class I believe they will put an ample amount of thought and work into it more than they typically would if the project was instead just a test over the book so I feel it will have a large impact on student learning and their achievement of the standard.
