ACTIVITY DESIGN
I. RATIONALE:
The Program Management Section of NMWRC will conduct a sound mind intervention through a Sports
Festival.
SPORTS INTERVENTION - Drug Addiction is considerably one of the most severe social crimes that ruin the
society. A chronic neurobiological disease that affects the brain and behavior of the person that forbids them to
resist the urge to use drugs despite the harmful consequence and requires integrated treatment of the mind,
body and spirit. Individuals suffering from drug addiction feels as though they cannot function normally without
the drugs because most drugs affect the brains “reward circuit” causing euphoria and flooding it with the
chemical messenger Dopamine.
A properly functioning reward system motivates a person to repeat behaviors needed to thrive, such as
eating or building relationships with love ones. But surges of dopamine in the reward circuit because of drugs
causes the reinforcement of pleasure leading to repeat the behavior again and again. And with the continues use
of drugs, the brain adapts by reducing the ability of the cells in the reward circuit to respond to the drugs
reducing the euphoria “high feeling” compared to the first time of use - an effect known as tolerance. These
brain adaptations often lead to the person becoming less and less able to derive pleasure from other things like
food, social activities, relationships while increasing use and dosage to chase the feeling of “high”. And with long
term use causes major damage to other brain chemical systems that affects function on; learning, judgment,
decision-making, stress management, memory, self-control and behavior. These changes are also responsible in
large part for the drug cravings and compulsion to use that make addiction unprecedented.
There are many factors that contribute to drug addiction: may it be genetic make-up, family background,
social influences, neurological factors or environmental issues. Society often thinks that drug addiction is caused
by a failure of willpower or by a weak character while medicine thinks it is a brain disease not a character flaw.
There is no one cause of addiction and there is no cure for addiction, but people can and do recover from
addiction trough treatment interventions and long term support.
The most positive and basic goals for addiction treatment is to achieve and be able to sustain
abstinence, reduce the risks of harms to self and others, and to improve overall health and social functioning.
Individual, group, and family therapy help an addict understand the nature and causes of addiction and teaches
them coping strategies and life skills needed to live a productive, sober life in the community.
Because of the changes brought by long-term use of drugs, multiple interventions and therapies are
necessary for rehabilitation. One important intervention in helping a drug dependent change is to improve their
mental skills. Thus, sports and a healthy competition would promote Self-confidence, motivation, ability to relax
under pressure, ability to concentrate, being mindfulness through team play and learn among all others. A drug
dependent will also learn to deal with failure and teaches life skills like teamwork, leadership, patience, discipline
and playing by the rules.
Sports can bring people together by giving a sense of personal identity, feelings of belongingness, social
identification and importantly self-esteem. Sport participation can also lead to greater health and well-being as
well as social, emotional, moral, physical and psychological development. In other words, sports have the
potential to promote positive development, balance mental and physical growth. and stability of both individuals
and the society. And this sports festival activity will serve as a stepping stone to achieve a holistic TC intervention.
