Professor Luz Marina Faustino
Academic Program(s) Visual Arts (the majority), Engineering, Math, Recreation
Class Structure: Class objective, objective – activities coherence (include
examples), warming up, closure.
The topic of the lesson was how to express a purpose, for this, the connectors
to so that in order to were presented through the topic of professions and
careers. The class is mainly conversational. The students interact and
participate in the different discussions. The teacher did a warm up activity,
asking the students for their last days, their other subjects and other tings
related to their daily life. After, she projected on the board, some questions
(pre task), to start with the lesson.
ESP/EAP Methodology: Teacher/learner centred, task/project based, type of
material, type of activities (i.e. small group discussion, studentled
activities, group/pairs/individual work), other tools/instructional aids (i.e.
technology, computer, video, overheads), class discussion.
The teacher methodology is task based. The teacher divides her lessons in pre
task, while task and post task. The use of this approach is very clear and
specified in the design of her lessons plans that she uses as a support for
each of her classes. She presents each class, a Document with the lesson plan
and she develops all what the lesson plan says through the class or classes if
it’s needed.
In this session the pre task consisted in some questions related to what the
students study, if the like it, if they always had wanted to do what they are
doing and if somebody in their family had studied the same. Then, she presented
them a Ted Talk Video two times. The first time to make sure if they understood
and the second time with punctual questions of the video.
After the video discussion, the teacher asked for two people to write a
sentence on the board, related to what was said in the video. Sentences that
would be used later for explaining the use of the connectors mention before.
Students also practiced the use of these connectors through an online activity
that they did together, the whole class.
During this class only the pre task was finished. But the teacher show an
example of what they had to do for the while task. She show them a video of a
mute scene, but before watching, she ask them questions related to theatre.
Then she showed the video and gave them the instructions of what they had to do
for the next class (a mute scene)
The teacher makes use of computer and video beam to show to students the
instructions, examples, or activities they are going to do while she explains
it. During this class there wasn’t any group activity or individual activity,
everything was discussed as a class.
ESP/EAP Content: Approach identified (EGAP, EAP, ESP, GE, kills, specialized
contents, language structure.
The approach identified is EGAP, as the name of the course says. The content of
the course is general and accurate for language learning non centered to any
specialization.
TeacherStudent Interaction: Input, instructions, use of L1, use of FL,
Linguistic explanations, Student’s reception, student’s production (written /
oral).
The students have a good proficiency level in the English language. Neither the
students, nor the teacher use the L1 in the classroom and if they use it is
only to ask for vocabulary. The oral production of the students is appropriate
for their level, they understand to the teacher when she talks to them, gives
instruction or explains the topics and when they don’t, they ask the pertinent
questions. The comprehension of the videos had to be guided. Because of the
authenticity of the Ted Talk Video, the teacher helped them with follow up
questions in terms of who was talking, to whom, where, about what, and specific
questions related to the talk. The linguistic explanation was about the
connectors. This explanation was clear and concise. They practiced it with some
examples and an online activity.
