Energy Band theory of Insulators, Semiconductors and Metals, Mobility and conductivity,
Electrons and holes in an intrinsic semiconductor, Donor and Acceptor impurities, Charge
densities in a semiconductor, Electrical properties of Ge and Si, Hall Effect, Generation and
Recombination of charges, Diffusion, the continuity equation, Injected minority carrier charge,
Potential Variation within a graded semiconductor.

UNIT II: JUNCTION DIODE CHARACTERISTICS & SPECIAL DIODES


CHARACTERISTICS
The open circuited p-n Junction, Current components in a p-n diode, Volt-Ampere
characteristics(Forward Bias and Reverse Bias) and temperature dependence of the V/I
characteristic, Diode Resistance(Static and Dynamic), Diode as a circuit element ,diode models,
Load line concept, Transition capacitance and Diffusion capacitance, Junction diode switching
times. Light Emitting Diodes, Photo diodes, Varactor diodes, Schottky diode and Solar Cells.
Zener diodes, Zener voltage regulator and its Limitations.

UNIT III: PN DIODE APPLICATIONS


Half Wave, Full wave and Bridge rectifiers (their operation, performance calculations ), with
Filters (RC,LC,RLC),Ripple factor calculations, Clippers and Clampers (Transfer
characteristics).

UNIT IV: TRANSISTOR CHARACTERISTICS


BJT construction, Transistor Junction formation (Collector-Base, Base-Emitter Junctions),
Current components, Modes of Transistor operations, Early Effect, BJT input and output
characteristics in different configurations.

UNIT V: TRANSISTOR BIASING AND STABILIZATION


Biasing techniques-different types of biasing , Transistor as an amplifier, Thermal runaway, heat
sinks, Thermal stabilization, Operating point stabilization against temperature and device
variations, Stability factors, Bias stabilization and compensation techniques.

UNIT VI: FIELD EFFECT TRANSISTORS AND MOSFETS


Construction of JFET, JFET characteristics and applications, MOSFET construction , Types of
