1. What is a rectifier? What are the various performance parameters of a rectifier?


2. What is a controlled rectifier? What is a converter? What is the delay angle of a
converter?
3. How is a phase controlled converter tuned on and off? How is the output voltage
varied?
4. What are the different types of power diodes? What is the difference between power
MOSFET and IGBT?
5. Does the input power of a converter depend on the load power factor? Do the output ripple
voltage of a converter depend on delay angle?
6. Explain with suitable diagram the working principle of UJT controlled SCR triggering
circuit? What is the advantage of PUT over conventional UJT?
7. What is the difference between Current source Inverter & Voltage source Inverter?
8. What is the basic difference between circulating current mode & blocked group operation
of a cyclo-converter?
9. What is the function of an inverter? Mention some of its practical applications.
10. What are the advantages of current source inverter over voltage source inverter?
11. With suitable circuit diagram describe in brief any one DC/forced commutation technique.

Descriptive type questions: each question carries 15 marks.

1. Draw a single-phase full converter circuit with a highly inductive load & show the
input-output waveforms and calculate the average & rms value of the output voltage.
2. Draw a three-phase full converter with a resistive load & show the input-output
waveforms. What is the role of the delay angle of such a converter?
3. A three phase full converter is operated from a three phase Y-connected 208V,60Hz
supply and load resistance is R=10 ohm. It is required to obtain an average output voltage of
50% of the maximum permissible output voltage. Calculate delay angle, the rms & average
output current, the rms & average thyristor current, the rectification efficiency.
4. What is duty cycle of a chopper? How does it varied? Explain the working principle of a
Step Down DC Chopper with R-L load? How are choppers controlled?
5. With suitable circuit diagram explain the operation of a Step Up DC Chopper.
6. Explain the operation of circulating current mode in case of a cyclo-converter with proper
circuit diagram & suitable voltage and current waveforms. What is the basic difference
between circulating current mode & blocked group operation?
7. Explain the operation of voltage source inverter with proper ckt diagram and suitable
voltage and current waveforms.
8. Draw the circuit diagram of a 3-phase bridge inverter and explain its 180​o​ conduction.
What is the basic difference between 120​o​ & 180​o​ conduction?
9. Explain the operation of 3-φ cyclo-converter with proper circuit diagram and suitable
voltage & current waveforms. Draw the 1-phase thyristor current source inverter circuit
diagram.
10. Explain the operation of Chopper controlled DC Motor Drive with proper circuit
diagram and waveforms.
11. Explain the operation of TRIAC controlled Single-phase AC Motor Drive with
proper circuit diagram and waveforms.
