Apart from the visible condition of the belt, which is explained fully in the General Instructions/Toothed Timing Belts section,
there are several other factors which must be considered when checking a timing belt:
Volvo recommend:
98MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner pulley every 80,000 miles or 8 years.
99MY: Replacement of timing belt every 110,000 miles or 10 years.
Replacement of tensioner pulley every 110,000 miles or 11 years.
2000-01MY: Replacement of timing belt at 90,000 miles or 10 years and then at 186,000 miles or 10 years.
Replacement of tensioner pulley at 90,000 miles or 8 years and then at 186,000 miles or 8 years.
2002-04MY: Replacement of timing belt every 96,000 miles or 10 years and replacement of tensioner pulley every 96,000 miles

2005MY: 5 cylinder: Replacement of timing belt, tensioner and guide pulley every 108,000 miles or 10 years.
6 cylinder: Replacement of timing belt, tensioner and guide pulley every 96,000 miles or 10 years.
2006MY - 12,500 mile interval: 5 cylinder: Replacement of timing belt, tensioner and guide pulley every 112,500 miles or 10
years.
6 cylinder: Replacement of timing belt, tensioner and guide pulley every 100,000 miles or 10 years.
2006MY - 18,000 mile interval: 5 cylinder: Replacement of timing belt, tensioner and guide pulley every 108,000 miles or 10
years.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston
damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur.
A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s).

7. Except S80 2,8/2,9: Fit crankshaft pulley holding tool [6] . Tool No.999 5433.
8. Except S80 2,8/2,9: Remove crankshaft pulley centre bolt [7] .
9. Remove:
Crankshaft pulley [8] .
Auxiliary drive belt cover (S80 2,8/2,9).
Tensioner bolt [9] .
Tensioner pulley.

14. Press down on belt at two positions . Ensure tensioner pointer moves freely [10] .
15. Fit timing belt upper cover [1] .
16. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise.
17. Ensure timing marks aligned [3] & [4] .
18. Ensure tensioner pointer correctly aligned:
-20°C - left of alignment marks [13] .
20°C - centre of alignment marks [14] .
50°C - right of alignment marks [15] .
