Caddington Wrap
Notes:
The body of this cardigan is knit in two mirrored pieces from
the center-back out to the edge, in a lace pattern. The first half
begins with a provisional cast-on, from which the second half is
picked up. The armholes are worked with waste yarn, which is
then unraveled and the sleeves are worked from the live stitches.
It is important to knit a generous swatch of the lace pattern,
and to wash it and block it before you cast on for this cardigan,
as any gauge problems (particularly row gauge) may cause
problems with fit. Inch measurements for the length are given
throughout the pattern, please note that if your gauge is off and
not compensated for, you may need more yarn.
When taking your measurements for this cardigan, pay particular
attention to the cross-back measurement. This should be nice
and snug, to avoid the cardigan falling off the shoulders.
When working the charts read RS rows (odd numbers) from right
to left, and WS rows (even numbers) from left to right.
Provisional Cast On
With scrap yarn, work a crochet chain several sts longer than you
need to cast on. With working yarn and needles, PU and K sts
into the bumps of the crochet chain.
Alternatively, CO the required number of sts in scrap yarn and
knit 1 row.
DIRECTIONS
Right Half
Back
Using the Provisional Cast On method, CO 197 (197, 211, 211, 211, 211,
211, 225, 225) sts.
Work in Diamond Pattern from chart until piece measures 6.5
(7.5, 8.25, 8.75, 9, 9, 9, 9.5, 9.5)” from CO edge, remembering to
compensate for any changes in gauge during swatch blocking,
finishing after a WS row. Make a note of which row you finished
on here so that you can work the left half to match.
Armhole
Next Row (RS): Work in pattern for 42 (46, 51, 55, 56, 57, 57, 59,
59) sts, K 48 (48, 48, 48, 54, 54, 60, 60, 66) sts using scrap yarn,
then slip all of these sts back onto the LH needle ready to work
again, knit across the scrap yarn sts again using the working yarn,
then work in pattern to end.
Front
Cont in pattern until piece measures 12 (12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22,
24)” from armhole, remembering to compensate for any changes
in gauge during swatch blocking, finishing after a Row 16.
Work Decreasing Diamonds pattern once. 142 (142, 156, 156, 156,
156, 156, 170, 170) sts.
Bind off.

Left Half
Back
Unpick the provisional CO from the center-back of the Right Half
and place these sts onto the needles.
Work in Diamond Pattern from chart until piece measures 6.5 (7.5,
8.25, 8.75, 9, 9, 9, 9.5, 9.5)” from CO edge for the same number of
rows as the Right Back, finishing after a WS row.
Armhole
Next Row (RS): Work in pattern for 107 (103, 112, 108, 101, 100, 94,
106, 100) sts, K 48 (48, 48, 48, 54, 54, 60, 60, 66) sts using scrap
yarn, then slip all of these sts back onto the LH needle ready to
work again, knit across the scrap yarn sts again using the working
yarn, work in pattern to end.
Front
Cont in pattern until piece measures 12 (12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22,
24)” from armhole, remembering to compensate for any changes
in gauge during swatch blocking, finishing after a Row 16.
Work Decreasing Diamonds pattern once. 142 (142, 156, 156, 156,
156, 156, 170, 170) sts
BO.
Sleeves (work both the same)
Unpick the scrap yarn from the armhole and place these sts onto
your DPNs.
Starting at the underarm, PM to indicate the beginning of the
rnd, PU and K 1 st from the underarm, K all sts from first side of
the armhole, PU and K 2 sts from the top of the armhole, K all
sts from the second side of the armhole, PU and K 1 st from the
bottom of the armhole. Join to work in the round. 100 (100, 100,
110, 112, 112, 124, 124, 136) sts.
Knit 5 (5, 12, 7, 7, 3, 6, 0, 6) rnds.
Dec Rnd: K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, Ssk, K1. 2 sts dec.
Knit 5 (6, 6, 6, 7, 11, 8, 13, 7) rnds.
Rep Dec Rnd followed by K rnds as established 17 (15, 14, 15, 13, 9,
12, 8, 14) more times. 64 (68, 70, 78, 84, 92, 98, 106, 106) sts.
Next 18 Rnds: *K1, P1; rep from * to end.
BO in pattern.
Ribbed Edge
Block to dimensions given in schematic, noting that
measurements do not include the 2.25” around any edge for the
rib except the sleeves.
With long circular needles, PU and K 10 sts per inch around the
outer edge, in a multiple of 4 sts. Join to work in the rnd and PM.
Next 18 Rnds: *K2, P2; rep from * to end.
BO in pattern.
Finishing
Weave in ends and steam the rib.
Weave in ends, wash and block to diagram.

Stockinette Stitch (St st, worked flat over any number of sts)
Row 1 (RS): Knit all sts. 3-Needle Bind Off
Row 2 (WS): Purl all sts. Used to seam two rows of live stitches together.

Garter Stitch (in the rnd over any number of sts)

Short Rows (Wrap & Turn)
There are several options for how to handle short rows, so
you may see different suggestions/intructions in a pattern; a
tutorial for the standard wrap & turn can be found at https://

Kitchener Stitch (also called Grafting)
With an equal number of sts on two needles, break yarn
leaving a tail approx four times as long as the row of sts,
and thread through a blunt yarn needle.
Hold needles parallel, with WSs facing in, and both
needles pointing to the right.
Perform Step 2 on the first front st, and Step 4 on the first
back st, then continue from Step 1, always pulling yarn tightly
so the grafted row tension matches knitted fabric:
Step 1: Pull yarn needle K-wise through front st and drop
st from knitting needle.
Step 2: Pull yarn needle P-wise through next front st,
leaving st on knitting needle.
Step 3: Pull yarn needle P-wise through first back st
and drop st from knitting needle.
Step 4: Pull yarn needle K-wise through next back st,
leaving st on knitting needle.
Rep Steps 1-4 until all sts have been grafted together,
finishing by working Step 1 through the last remaining
front st, then Step 3 through the last remaining back st.
