Science Experiment:
Egg in the Bottle!

Have you ever seen an egg inside a glass bottle? Do this

experiment and see how a hard-boiled egg can push itself inside
a glass bottle.

Materials Required:

1. A glass bottle with a small opening

2. A hard-boiled egg

3. Matchbox

To do List:

1. Place a glass bottle on the table. See to it that the mouth of the
glass bottle is smaller than the egg. The egg should not pass
through the mouth even after pushing it hard.

8
2. Ask your parent to light a match-stick, put it immediately inside
the glass bottle, and close the bottle with an egg as shown in the
picture.

3. Observe that as the flame of the match-stick goes off in the glass
bottle, the egg slowly passes through the opening and falls inside
the glass bottle as shown in the picture.

What happened?
4. When a lighted match-stick is placed inside the glass bottle, the air
inside the bottle gets heated up. The heated-up air tries to escape
from the glass bottle. The hard-boiled egg acts like a cork. The cold
air outside the glass bottle exerts pressure on the egg and makes it
pass through the small opening. Thus, the egg gets inside the glass
bottle, though the opening is very small for it to pass.

This science experiment helps in making your child understand

the external and internal pressures created
by the cold and hot air.

Story Zone: A Pot with
a Hole!

Reading stories will help in improving your reading

E skills and vocabulary too. Children, try to underline
hard-words while reading and learn their meanings.

Once upon a time, there was a farmer. He used to carry water from
the river daily using two pots. The two pots were tied at each end of
a pole, and the farmer carried the pole on his shoulder. One of
the pots had a small hole in it. By the time the farmer reached
his home, half of the water in that pot with a hole would have
leaked. The farmer never
complained.

One day, the pot without hole made fun of the other one. It said,
“Oh! See you have a small hole and are useless for the farmer.
He is simply carrying you though you can’t give him full water as
you have been with him for many years.” Hearing those words,
the pot with hole felt bad and cried very badly.

10
The farmer heard the cries of the pot and asked what made it cry
so bitterly. The pot said, “I’m sorry. I’m not useful to you anymore.
I get only half of the water because of this hole on my side. You can
throw me away and get a new pot if you want.” The farmer smiled
and asked both the pots to watch the path carefully when they went
back home after fetching the water from the river that day.

On returning home, the farmer asked the pots, “Did you find
anything?” The pot with the hole replied, “Oh yes! I saw beautiful
flowers on one side of the path.” The farmer replied, “The beautiful
flowers grew there because you watered them daily. I knew you had
a small hole on your side, but I still used you as I wanted to water
those plants. I deliberately planted flower seeds on your side of the
path.” The pot with hole felt very happy. The other pot also learned
that it should not point out others fault. Sometimes, those flaws can
be used to achieve great things!

This story helps your child to learn the moral that he/she should
never criticize others for their flaws.
