LESSON TOPIC: Handel’s Messiah

STANDARDS: National: Re7.2.7b, Re9.1.7a, Pr6.1.7a


State: 9.1.8ac, 9.2.8abcdej, 9.3.8ad
OBJECTIVES: Students will compare two different versions of Handel’s Messiah to
identify their musical similarities and differences

Students will identify key points of Handel’s life.

DO-NOW: Write down 1 thing you have learned about the Baroque Era this far in
the quarter.

MAIN Students will be introduced to G. F. Handel.


ACTIVITY: Students will listen to a radio show about Handel and write down 6 facts about
his life.
Students will review what they have learned about Handel through a Listening
Check of 6 questions.
Students will listen to the original Hallelujah Chorus, and then a Gospel
Version.
While listening, Students will write down words to describe the songs timbre,
texture, tempo, dynamics, and mood.
Students will then fill in a Venn diagram using the words they listed to examine
the similarities and differences between the two versions.
Students will discuss these findings as a class.

CLOSING: Students will perform a rhythmic accompaniment to “Play that Song” using body
percussion.

ASSESSMENT: Informal: Classroom discussion/participation.


Formal: Worksheet completion.

MATERIALS: PowerPoint presentation, Projector, Speakers, Laptop, Handel’s Messiah
