1. Critical part in this project.

The critical phase during this construction is when building its foundation. The sea water
level at 2 meter on this site. When the contractor try to dig up for the placing the foundation,
the water will come out. Beside that, the weather also one of the critical component on this
project. During construction of pile cap, the contractor have to dig up the area, the water
come out because there a lot of water table below this area. So one of the solution is to use a
mechanical pump to pump out the water from underground. The other thing is lift. Lift and
the building is not in combine. That is one part building, and 1 part for the lift. On the area of
the lift also we concern that the concrete on the lift area will “budging”. Budging is where the
concrete expend where it will cause a obstruction for the lift to operate. Budging is hard to
identify in lift section where it on the inside of the building. Money also one of the critical
part of the project, but not in this project. There was a project where the contractor been part
on building of the road at residential area around Batu Pahat, where that premix on that day is
1m2 RM10. The project run for 2 years. During the end of the project, where the last
activities on the project were laying the premix, the price suddenly increase to 1m2 RM50.
So the contractor have to absorb the losses of that project.

2. Project Manager Part

Project Manager responsibility are finding sub-con for the construction. For example, for
brickwork, he have to find at least 3 sub-con for the activity. He not just based on the
bidding, but also choose based on the workmanship of the sub-con, either they have permit or
not, how they pervious project. They also have the power to speed up the progress of the
construction. Unlike supervisor, we just follow what Project Manager said.

3. Waste Management on the site


For our construction, we have less wastage because we use a high quality of material. For
example, our formwork can be use 15 times. Tego Plywood. If ordinary plywood it cannot be
use more than 5 times. Usually I rent a lorry per day, to sent it to the landfill. We collect all
the wastage on one place and we sent it to landfill. We do this daily. We also gave our
wastage such as wood to the villagers around this area so that sustainable can be done. For
piling, we sell the wastage of the piling, the cut off the piling. For reinforced bar, we usually
sell it back. For our company we have its own company, so I cannot sell it back, we just sent
it to the factory for refurbish or reuse it. For concrete we usually damp it in this area. We dug
up a hole and we just put it inside the hole. We don’t recycle our stuff because we need to
maintain our quality.
4. Approach to green technology

On this project, we just use rainwater storage. We collect the rainwater and store it on a spark
tank usually for gardening. For other project, we use IBS, we use lightweight concrete. The
process are much faster using the IBS but in Malaysia there not much exposure about IBS.
Contractor here already have on their mind set that the conventional brick are the best.
Lightweight not so good in term of strength. That are their mindset. Overall I can said that the
contractor are not expose more in IBS, they don’t even know what IBS is. That’s why IBS in
Malaysia are still unknown or still on the lower level. The contactor prefer conventional other
than IBS. Last time I do the “by panel” system. It is difficult to do, we have to hire to skilled
workers to do the job.

5. Approach to sustainable on this project

On this project, the first obstruction that I had to face is during the early stage of the project,
which is piling. We were using Hydraulic Hammer to do the piling. The sound can be
disturbed and the same time it can be loud. But during the operation of the piling, we did not
receive any complaint about the sound. The next thing is the road access to the site. Example,
during UTHM convocation. All the materials that had been hauled by lorry cannot enter the
site. So we had to decide to change the date for the transportation the materials. I think that’s
all for the disturbance around this site.

6. Project being manage

Before construction, all we have to do is, Site Investigation. How to access the road,
electrical, location of site office, and the water supply. The condition for soil and the workers
camp. How the workers transportation of the workers to the site. For example, if the workers
use buses. The site needs all the equipment, like meeting room, air-con and so on. For me,
before construction I usually memorize the plan for 3 or 4 days so that I can manage to know
what materials needed for the construction. For example, piling and hammer 7 tonnes. If the
building less then 3 storeys, crane would not be necessary. During construction, from pile
cap, testing, stump, ground beam slab and column until roof. After that the infrastructure of
the building, after construction, hand over to the client, defect checking and so on. Wastage
of the construction we do it during the construction either we sent it to the nearest landfill or
we gave it to nearby village where they needed some of the construction materials such as
wood and other things.
