Chapter 3

Research Methods and Procedures

This chapter includes the research design, data gathering procedure and the
instrument used in the research entitled “A study about the Satisfaction of Junior High
School Students of GSCS to the Service Quality of Canteen”

Research Design

The researchers formulated this study in a quantitative manner, descriptive study

which means that a study looks into the characteristics of the respondents particularly
between the satisfactory of a student of Junior High School and the service quality of
the campus canteen. Quantitative research is a research design that aims to provide a
complete, detailed description of the study using statistical data, model or figures to
show the outcome observation.

This study’s goal is to know the satisfaction rate of the Junior High School
students to the service quality of canteen through giving questionnaires to them.

Respondents of the Study

Since a canteen is located on the Junior High School campus, the preferred
respondents of the study are the JHS students from sections within Grade 7 to Grade
10 and each year level is composed of two sections namely Matthew and Mark. The
researchers’ target population was all JHS students as they are the one who buys
products of the canteen and they are the only people who can tell if they are satisfied in
the service and product quality of the canteen which is located at Junior High School
building of Good Shepherd Christian School. It was composed of 154 Boys and 105
Girls and they are included in the sampling frame.
Sampling procedure

The researchers used random sampling technique anchored with the result of
sample size computation. Random sampling technique is a technique used to pick
samples from the population and to determine who will be eliminated as the study’s
respondent. Through this, the research will gather data in a more objective way and
reducing some respondents after the research determined the sample size.

The margin of error used by this research is 1% and the confidence level is 95%.
To determine the sample size, a computation was used:

n= (NZa/2^2){p(1-p)}/NE^2+(Za/2^2){p(1-p)}

n= 1002.6576 (0.25) / 0.0261 + 3.8416 (0.25)

n= 250.6644 / 0.9865

n= 254.10 or

n=254

Data Collection Instrument

The researchers created a questionnaire which contains questions on how

satisfied are students in the service quality of the canteen in different aspects like
product, pricing, ambiance, neatness and service. The tool which the researchers used
is paper that contained questions for the data collection. They were only allowed to
answer four options from scale 1 to 4. 1 is the least and 4 being the greatest satisfaction
rate or level. In that way it helped the researchers to gather data and compute statistical
data to show the outcome of the study. The questionnaire was validated by the research
adviser from SHS faculty of GSCS Mr. Jeramel D. Balleras, and by the Practical
Research 2 teacher Mr. Nathaniel P. Nagales.
The questionnaires were distributed to the respective rooms of the respondents
in JHS building of GSCS with the consent of their respective advisers and subject
teachers.

Following are the research questions which served as primary basis of the research
instrument:

1. How satisfied are the Junior High School students in the service of canteen in
terms of the following?
a. Serving time
b. Behavior of staff
c. Consistent availability of service
d. Provision of their needs and wants
e. Grooming of staffs
2. How satisfied are the Junior High School Students in the ambiance and neatness
of the canteen in terms of:
a. Comfortable feeling when eating inside the canteen area
b. Safety when eating the food
c. Cleanliness of kitchen area
d. Ventilation of the canteen area
3. How satisfied are the Junior High School students with the quality of the food in
terms of price, taste, and presentation?
a. Food’s price
b. Offering healthy foods
c. Taste of food

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers came to the respective rooms of each section and grade level
that was convenient for them. But before that we provided a letter which will allow us for
conducting a survey to the beloved principal of the school Mrs. Delna C. Moralita, to the
JHS Coordinator Mrs. Rosalia D. Sardido, and to the advisers. As we terminate the
process of conducting a survey, the data collected or the respondents’ answers will be
tallied using the research Data statistical treatment.

Statistical Treatment of Data

After gathering the response of the students, the researchers started computing
the scores to get the results of the study. The mode is the used statistical treatment as it
is fit to the questionnaire’s ordinal-scale designed. A mode is a statistical treatment data
which gets the answer through determining the most frequent amount of number. To get
the mode, a person will list all the answers in order and count what number is being
repeated mostly than any number or value.

Here is the formula for the mode:
