PCM 600 Ver. 1.5

Release Note
Dear Reader We are pleased to announce the release of version 1.5 of the Protection and Control IED Manager,
PCM 600.

Application PCM 600 is the toolbox for the new Control and Protection IEDs. It covers process steps of the IED’s
life cycle, from the selection of an IED, engineering, testing, commissioning, operation and mainte-
nance to the support for function analysis after primary system faults. PCM 600 also supports the
new IEC 61850 standard.

Furthermore, PCM 600 supports such operating tasks as parameter setting and disturbance han-
dling of selected ABB IEDs of previous product generations. PCM 600 will gradually support a wider
range of existing ABB IED products.

• Important note for CAP 540 Users: please remember to install
CAP 540 first and then PCM 600. Do not do the opposite
because this will require uninstallation of PCM 600.
• If you are using PSM and PCM in the same computer and the
PSM version is 1.8 or earlier, you must install PSM first. Otherwise
the MSDE installation fails.
• If MicroSCADA PRO SYS 600 9.2 or earlier and PCM 600 1.5
are installed in the same computer, SYS 600 must be installed
before the PCM 600. If this order is not followed the opening of a
PCM 600 project (and the handling of other projects too) will fail.
• If there is a firewall in the computer in which PCM 600 has been
installed, the firewall has to be configured in such a way that it
enables the PCM 600 to access the network.
• When installing PCM 600 Ver. 1.5 on top of PCM 600 Ver. 1.1 and
PCM 600 Engineering or Engineering Pro is used, CAP 531 has
to be uninstalled before installation of PCM 600 Ver. 1.5.
• At least the Disturbance Handling Tool in PCM 600 does not work
fully in multi-processor PCs.
• PCM 600 has been tested with the standard English versions
of Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Users of other language
versions of the operating system may experience errors in the
behavior of PCM 600.

5. Assign the Connectivity Packages for PCM 600 Ver. 1.5 using
the Connectivity Package Manager
6. Upgrade your project(s) using the PCM 600 Project upgrade
utility. The utility is available on the IED Connect CD for the
670 products and at inside.abb.com/substationautomation.
7. Start PCM 600 Ver. 1.5. Select the project in the Open/
Manage project window and use the conversion tool to open
the converted project and import the SCD file from step 2
using the ‘Ignore PCM object type’ option from SCL import
‘Advance options’
NOTE! If your project includes multiple IEC 61850 subnetworks,
the OPC server will display an error message(s) before importing
the SCD file. These errors are due to the handling of projects with
multiple IEC 61850 subnetworks being changed between PCM
600 Ver. 1.1 SP 2 and PCM 600 Ver. 1.5. To be able to fully work
with a multiple-subnetwork project created in Ver. 1.1 SP2, the
whole procedure has to be executed the same number of times
as the number of subnetworks included in the original project and
thereby the original project will be divided into several projects.
The number of projects in the PCM 600 Ver. 1.5 is same as the
number of IEC 61850 subnetworks of the original project in the
PCM 600 Ver. 1.1 SP2.

CAP 531

• Save the configuration data from time to time when CAP 531 runs
in a Microsoft Windows XP environment.
• CAP 531 is an application built on Microsoft’s COM technology
and when it runs in a Microsoft Windows XP SP2 environment,
installation and registration might cause some problem depending
on the specific PC’s firewall settings and authority settings. This
problem is induced by Microsoft’s security Update policy.
• There is a batch file available for proprer registration of the COM
application. Alternatively you can start C:\ProgramFiles\ABB\
PCM600\Bin\Tools\CAP531Tool\CommManager.exe manually.
• Please don’t check the ‘Download PST configuration’ box when
downloading the graphical configuration to the IED. (This is a
feature of CAP 540 only).

supporting information
• Before using SMT, it is important to make sure, that each
Substation, Voltage Level under substation and Bay under voltage
level has a unique caption within the same level objects. As the
system scl is exported as input for the SMT at start-up, duplicate
names cause the resulting system-SCL to be deficient.

SCL Handling

• If LN-types of the Logical Device are changed between exporting

the SCD-file from PCM 600 and importing it back, the NamPlt.
configRevision of the LN0 should be updated (=increased). If this
is not done, the IEDs/LDs in question should be removed from
the SCD-file before importing it back to PCM 600.
