Unit Overview
Unit Plan Title: The Prototyping Essentials
Curriculum-Framing Questions

Essential Question Why Technology upgrade needed?

Unit Questions How to Create a prototype of technology for the future?

Content Questions What are the systematic applications of prototyping?

What is the innovation of current and future Technology?
Unit Summary:

Prototypes are routinely used as part of the product design process to give engineers and designers
the ability to explore design alternatives, test theories and confirm performance prior to starting
production of a new product. Almost every engineering discipline uses prototypes in some way,
including aerospace, computer, mechanical, civil, environmental and electrical engineering.

Students learn about the manufacturing phase of the design process. They start by building
prototypes, which is a special type of model used to test new design ideas. Students gain experience
using a variety of simple building materials, such as foam core board, balsa wood, cardstock and hot
glue. They present their prototypes to the class for user testing and create prototype iterations based
on feedback.

Students able to identify the opportunities and needs for new media technology innovations, apply
Making prototypes based on analyses of social. Technological, and economic context, and of current
and emerging media technology innovations.

Targeted Philippine Basic Education Curriculum Competencies

The student will demonstrate proficiency in creating prototype by:

 Identify innovation opportunities through analysis of user, technology and

business needs.
 Apply appropriate prototyping approaches at different stages of design and
development.
 Ideate and develop concepts.
 Build prototypes of various types.
 Test and evaluate prototypes with users.
 Manage design and development process.
 Communicate results of one’s own work to different audiences.

Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this unit the students/learners will be able to;

- relate the topics of prototype design to their daily activities;

- discuss the different design through the creation of prototypes;

- use the different technique in making paper prototypes and model;

- categorize the types of design or techniques in creating prototypes

- create, redesign, test through correct concept and steps;

- judge the output that the have created and provide a score in relation to the rubrics.

Procedures:

Day 1: Orientation and Introduction

* The teacher will provide the class rules and regulations.

* Introduction/ Orientaton of the lesson will be presented.

Day 2: Overview and Groupings

Day 3: Assigning of Topics and Preparation for Reporting

* The teacher will assign the topics to each group for the reporting.
* The students will be given a chance to ask questions or any inquiry about the topic.
* The students should prepare or plan their topic to report.

Day 4: Checking of Reports

* The students will present their report via presentation software for discussion
and word processing software for handouts.
* The teacher will check and do some revisions/corrections on the students work.

Day 5: Concept Map and Discussion

* The teacher will present the concept map and the first topic to the students.
* The students will relate the topic to their daily activities happening currently.

Day 6 - Day 7: Group Reporting

* The students will present their report and handouts.

Group 1 Presentation, Group 2 Presentation, Group 3 Presentation
* The teacher will evaluate them using the rubrics for group reporting.

Day 8: Project Discussion

* The teacher will provide and present a topic as discussion with sample video clips.
* The teacher will give an individual performance task for the students to draw their
choices in model of their prototype
* The students will analyze the types of design or techniques in creating prototype

Day 9: Brainstorming

* The teacher will show video clips that are useful for Making a Prototype model.
* The students will be given the time to think and reflect to the common problems
or mistakes in making process and they will formulate a resolution.

Day 10: Concept making

* The teacher will present the rubrics in video project and peer evaluation sheet.
* The students will plan and draft the project by sketching prototype model.

Day 11 - Day 12: Gathering and Formulating Project

* The students will perform the plan that they have formulated and gather data
which will incorporate the use of different techniques in designing Prototype.

Day 13 - Day 14: Project Prototype Making

* Session 1 The students will be given time to create their first prototype model
Project.

* The Session 2 The students will be given time to remodel their work and finalize
their project.

Day 15: Project Presentation

* The students will present their projects.

* The class will observe the output done by each group and they will evaluate
and provide feedback to the videos they’ve done. They will refer to the rubrics.

Day 16: Assessment

* The teacher will provide a Paper-and-pen Test as assessment based on TOS.
