Journal Article • Journal: Australian Mathematics Teacher • Author: Merrilyn Goos, • Year: 2016 • Brief Summary: This article was written by Merrilyn Goos who was asked to speak at a conference about challenges and opportunities in teaching mathematics. She came up with five questions to draw the participants into conversation during the conference and then wrote this article about it afterwards. During the conference she presented a question to the audience that they would discuss it then she left them with another question that she hoped would point educators towards opportunities and directions for the next 50 years. The first question she asked was “Who is qualified to teach mathematics to children and young people?” The author says in her article that out of all her five questions this one is the most important. The second question was “Is mathematics teaching an attractive and viable career?” The third question the audience was to discuss was “What counts as effective mathematics teaching?” The fourth question was “Who gets to learn mathematics?” The last and finally question was “How do we shape public perceptions of mathematics?” Theses and Dissertation • Name of dissertation: Mathematics teaching assistants' reflections on their first- year teaching • Author: Alexandre Cardoso • Year: 2014 • Brief Summary: This dissertation was about the critical role that Mathematics teaching assistants play when instructing undergraduate mathematics students. It states that there is an extensive amount of literature that addresses teaching and learning of mathematics but very little that discusses MTA’s teaching of mathematics. The point of this study was to better understand how first year teaching MTA’s express mathematical knowledge. They found 21 participates from 5 distinct MKT categories for their study. The participant had only four previous teaching experiences at the college level, which made them perfect for this study. The participates wrote weekly reflections that they then coded and analyzed to conclude their study.
