Coaching and mentoring have become increasingly important these days. As of today,
more people or organisations are looking for coaches and mentors either for personal or
professional development. Coaching and mentoring is becoming more important as it has
seen to be a boost to build a concrete change in an individual which are positives traits as
well as helping both coach or mentor and their learners in exchanging knowledge. It is also
applying in organisations and companies that would bring benefits towards them when an
individual has good traits in them that will lead them to perform well while doing their works
and given tasks. In order to achieve organisations goals or company goals or also known as
the company’s motto, coaching method and mentoring method are both suitable as it helps
an organisation to emerge. Coaching is a process involving the focuses on performance
improvement and communication involves also related to the coachee personal and
specialised goals (Moyle, 2017). Fundamentally, the presence of a coach is to help learners
to learn. Mentoring is a process where the focuses are on developing specific skills and
knowledge that is also known as life learning of a person’s professional and personal growth
and it is often a professional relationship between mentors and mentees. Coaching is usually
can be seen in sports where a coach is in charge in improving the athletes to the higher
achievements and the achievements shall achieve during in a period of time and it is often
called contract between the coach and an organisation to work with the athletes. Nowadays ,
coaching is not only used in sports but coaching has been widely used in organisations where
the needs of the coach are very important for the career growth of the employees in an
organisation or company. Moyle (2017), stated that mentoring involves a mentor and mentees
for the process can be done. Mentoring is usually taking place in organisations where the
presence of a mentor is helping their mentees in developing specific skills and knowledge
that will enhance an individual in term of personal growth as well as their less-experienced
professional jobs. There a few differences and similarities between coaching and mentoring.

First, coaching and mentoring have different period of time required between coach
and coachee as well as mentor and mentee. Neupane (2015) stated that the relationship
between coaching and mentoring can be either short-term as well long-term duration in order
to work on the goals or focus. The relationship between mentors and mentees are usually
taken a very long time because they have a kind of long-term relationship. The reason to have
a long-term relationship is that, mentors are able to know their mentees in deep if they wanted
to help and guide them. Mentoring can be either formal and informal and in formal mentoring,

it is being notable that the organisations focuses and individual goals are structured as well
as the duration and scope of mentoring (Neupane, 2015). To be successful in mentoring, it is
very important to have a long-term relationship as it will help in boosting the environment in
trust between both mentors and mentees by providing a safe environment between mentor
and mentee. Neupane (2015), also shared that in new environment, the employees will need
time to adapt before capable in working effectively in organisations. One of the aims in
mentoring is to help the mentee development, by the provision, supervision as well as
inspiration and direction towards mentee (Moyle, 2017). It is not easy for an individual to
open up themselves and by knowing them for a quite a long time, it can build trust to them
and time will make them comfortable and willingly open up by themselves. Mentoring
usually taking place in the organisations where it involves mostly with teachers and lectures
with their students or other academic organisations (Lejonberg, Elstad, Sandvik et al, 2018).
Mentoring can be either formal and informal and in formal mentoring, it is being notable that
the organisations focuses and individual goals are structured as well as the duration and scope
of mentoring (Neupane, 2015).

While mentoring requires a long-term relationship, it is different in coaching that only

needs a short-term relationship between the coach and the learners. Coaching has a short-
term relationship because usually in coaching is taking place for a specific purpose that needs
a coach. The process of coaching mostly only last for a short period of time (Neupane, 2015).
Kashman (2018), Global Leader of CEO & Executive Development at Korn Ferry have a lot
of experiences in coaching thousands of CEOs, leaders and team for years all around the
world, he stated that time investment is really important in coaching. Th needs of attention
and time are compulsory as it will bring significant results in the organisations. Morgan and
Rochford (2017), believe focusing on systematic method towards accomplishing goals can
boost personal satisfaction and personal growth as well as professional performance for both
coach and coachee. Coaching only needs a short amount of time because of the definite goals
that have been stated since the beginning of the contract or the agreement. Moreover,
Neupane (2015) specified during the short period of time, coaching is important in improving
the performance in specific and definite skills or goals. The primary ownerships of the goals
are the coach who is responsible in coaching the learners though the learners are the one who
are working towards the goals (Neupane, 2015). Coaching is also a task-oriented relationship
where the focuses are concrete and coach is supposedly capable of developing the coachee
skills. The relationship in coaching is also through trust, direct communication, joint

obligation, sustenance and teamwork between coach and coachee (Morgan and Rochford,
2017).

Next, another difference is the focus of coaching and mentoring in achieving their
purposes. Coaching and mentoring have playing roles in the professional development of the
leaders, principles and individually internationally which are playing their roles in
organisations (Celoria and Hemphill, 2014). The focus in achieving the purpose of coaching
and mentoring may be differ as coaching is focusing in term of performance of an individual
while mentoring focuses on the development of an individual. Mentoring refers to the
relationship where mentors are able to share their knowledge as support in mentoring by
using both formal and informal relationship structures as written by Neupane (2015).
Neupane himself also shared that mentoring which focused on the social and discussion able
to perform well in work-life. Morgan and Rochford (2017) stated the objective in mentoring
is the growth of the mentees which are skills transmission, broader knowledge and
improvement of attitudes as an individual. An experienced mentor may able to give
comments and evaluations of the mentee’s academic performance or consultation of the
mentees’ development as an individual (Lejonberg, Elstad, Sandvik et al, 2018). According
to Rekha and Ganesh (2012) the development and the growth of the mentees is the focus in
the youth mentoring. Morgan and Rochford (2017), also highlights the relationship between
coach and coachee is goal-oriented as part of learning process. Based on the research conducted
by Taylor and Black (2018), they stated that coaching usually taking place in a form of one-to-
one relationship which the focus is in the performance and competency development of
coachee. Neupane (2015) refers coaching as a method used in improving and bring out high
performance of the employees in a working environment and mostly focuses on the goals. He
also stated coaching’s target on the confidence and individual participation in social activities.
Coaching is focus on the performance of an individual therefore feedbacks and performance
observation by coach can bring out the best performance of coachee within the duration of
coaching and this is usually taking place in workplace as an example in sports. A football coach
has a contract of 2 years to train the players in footballs to achieve their aim in winning a match
and as a coach it is very important in providing practices, giving evaluations to the players and
observing the team performance. Neupane (2015) called that as a contract between employer
who wanted to have skilful individual by learning knowledge and skills for them to be able to
perform well while working.

Apart from their differences, coaching and mentoring also have mutual similarity
which is all the focuses of coaching and mentoring agreed on an individual is helping in
enhancing inspiration and the productivity of an individuals (Neupane, 2015). The focus in
coaching is more to the performance of an individual however, it is actually to help in
improving individual traits that will help in daily life and workplace which is same goes to
the The similarity between coaching and mentoring is the needs of an individual to improve
the performance and development of the other individual.
