1. BACKGROUND
The Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu is a Roman Catholic Marian shrine in
Mannar district of Sri Lanka, with a history of over 400 years; this shrine
acts as a centre for pilgrimage and worship not only for Sri Lankan Catholics
but also for other religious people.
The festivals at Madhu church, originally held on 2nd July and 15th August,
is now has 10 festivals during the year. The most popular and the largest
is the festival held on 15th August which draws nearly 600,000 - 700,000
Nos. of pilgrims, especially since this fall on school holidays. Apart from
these festivals, few thousands of pilgrims and visitors daily visit Madhu
Shrine, from various parts of the country.
Presently, Madhu church is supplied with the limited with almost non-
treated water supply and there is no proper treatment facility available in
the water supply system and for long run with this supply may create
several chronic health issues.
Therefore, it is very important to provide adequate water supply with good
quality to Madhu Church.

2. PRESENT STATUS

The devotees of Madhu Church and its administrative personnel are being
supplied with pipe borne water by NWSDB for drinking purposes as well as
for other secondary purposes through two distinguished piping systems.
Present peak water supply during festival is between 3,000 - 3,500
cum/day.

The drinking water which is partially treated for bacteriological

contamination is supplied from ground water sources and the surface water
is supplied from the designated reservoir of Madhu (church) without any
treatment for secondary purposes. This problem can be solved by providing
a safe pipe borne water supply.

3. PROPOSED FACILITIES

Water source for this proposed project is Madhu reservoir, which maintained
by the Church only for water supply purpose, and ground water. The
designed demand is 1000cum/day. Under this proposed project, following
components have been proposed;

• Construction of Intake and water treatment plant (1000cum/day)

• Supply & Laying of transmission pipe line
• Supply & Laying of distribution pipe line
• Construction of under Ground reservoir
• Construction of elevated tower
