Identify the meaning and describe the mandate, functions, and compositions of the

following tourism organizations:

I. International

1. UNWTO - The World Tourism Organization is the United Nations agency


responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible
tourism. As the leading international organization in the field of tourism, UNWTO
promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and
environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in
advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide.

2. ICAO - The International Civil Aviation Organization is a specialized agency of


the United Nations It codifies the principles and techniques of international air
navigation and fosters the planning and development of international air transport to
ensure safe and orderly growth. The ICAO Council adopts standards and
recommended practices concerning air navigation, its infrastructure, flight inspection,
prevention of unlawful interference, and facilitation of border-crossing procedures for
international civil aviation ICAO defines the protocols for air accident investigation. As a
Specialized Agency of the UN, ICAO works closely with the UN, and particularly with
the Economic and Social Council. In light of its technical mandate, ICAO also works
closely with other UN Specialized Agencies and International Organizations, such
as: The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

3. IATA - The International Air Transport Association and is the official trade
organization for the world's airlines (more than 85 participating nations). For air
carriers, IATA provides a polled resource for scheduling, traffic and routes,
standardizing services and the creation of a worldwide public service for the air
industry. IATA plays an important role in the creation of essential training and
validation materials for airlines and travel agencies, for the safe-keeping,
processing, and management of revenue distribution, dangerous goods
transport training, and air safety for both the industry and passengers.

4. WTTC - The World Travel &Tourism Council is the forum for business leaders in the
Travel & Tourism industry. With Chief Executives of some one hundred of the
world's leading Travel & Tourism companies as its Members, WTTC has a
unique mandate and overview on all matters related to Travel & Tourism.
II. Regional

1. OECD - The mission of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and


Development is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-
being of people around the world. The OECD provides a forum in which
governments can work together to share experiences and seek solutions to common
problems.

2. PATA - The Pacific Asia Travel Association is a membership association acting


as a catalyst for the responsible development of the Asia Pacific travel and tourism
industry. The main objectives of PATA are: To promote and develop tourism in the
Pacific region. To provide timely up-to-date and informed. Founded in 1951, the
Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is a not-for profit association that is
internationally acclaimed for acting as a catalyst for the responsible development of
travel and tourism to, from and within the Asia Pacific region.

3. CTA - The Canadian Transportation Agency is an independent, quasi-judicial


tribunal and regulator that has, with respect to all matters necessary for the exercise
of its jurisdiction, all the powers of a superior court. CTA is an independent
administrative tribunal of the Government of Canada that makes decisions relating to
federally regulated modes of transportation (air, rail and marine). It is responsible for:
Dispute resolution to resolve complaints about transportation services, fares, rates,
and charges; Accessibility: to ensure that the national transportation system is
accessible, particularly to persons with disabilities; and Economic regulation: to
provide approvals and licenses and to make decisions on matters involving federally
regulated air, rail, and marine transportation.

4. APEC – The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation implements a wide variety of


initiatives to help integrate the region's economies and promote trade while
addressing sustainability and social equity. APEC's role in facilitating regional
integration has proven essential to promoting trade and economic growth in the
Asia-Pacific.The Bogor Goals help APEC's goal to enhance economic growth and
prosperity for the regions by striving for free and open trade and investment in Asia-
Pacific by 2010 for industrialized economies and 2020 for developing economies.
5. OAS - The Organisation of American States their mission is to support the
development of tangible and intangible cultural and tourism assets and cement new
and established links between the tourism and culture sectors to enhance the
contribution of both sectors to economic and social development in OAS member
states.

III. National

1. DOT - The Department of Tourism is the primary planning, programming,


coordinating, implementing and regulatory government agency in the development
and promotion of the tourism industry, both domestic and international, in
coordination with attached agencies and other government instrumentalities. DOT
shall be the primary government agency charged with the responsibility to
encourage, promote, and develop tourism as a major socio-economic activity to
generate foreign currency and employment and to spread the benefits of tourism to
both the private and public sector.

2. TIEZA - The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority formerly the
Philippine Tourism Authority (Filipino: Pangasiwaang Pilipino sa Turismo), is an
agency of the Philippine national government under the Department of
Tourism responsible for implementing policies and programs of the department
pertaining to the development, promotion, and supervision of tourism projects in
the Philippines. The Act supports the establishment of Tourism Enterprise Zones
(TEZs) established to be the centers of tourism development in the
country. TIEZA is mandated to designate, regulate and supervise the TEZs
established under this Act, as well as develop, manage and supervise tourism
infrastructure projects in the country.

3. TPB - The Tourism Promotions Board (formerly Philippine Convention and


Visitors Corporation) is a corporate body attached to the Philippine Department
of Tourism(PDOT). It is tasked to formulate and implement an integrated domestic
and international promotions and marketing program for Philippine tourism. The
Philippine Tourism Promotions Board is an attached agency of the Department
of Tourism which is primarily responsible for implementing an integrated domestic
and international promotions and marketing program for the Philippines as a tourism
destination as well as for tourism investments.
4. IA - The Intramuros Administration is an agency of the Department of Tourism of
the Philippines that is mandated to orderly restore, administer, and develop the
historic walled area of Intramuros that is situated within the modern City of Manila as
well as well as to insure that the 16th- to 19th-century Philippine-Spanish
architecture remains the general architectural style of the walled area.
The Intramuros Administration is responsible for the orderly restoration and
development of Intramuros as a monument to the Hispanic period of our history.

5. NPDC - The National Parks Development Committee as an attached agency of


the DOT shall support programs & projects implemented by the Department in their
promotion of inclusive growth and wide distribution of economic benefits through the
tourism industry. To be the lead agency that will provide fully-developed and well-
maintained parks for the Filipinos' wholesome recreation and socio-cultural
education which will contribute towards the enrichment of national identity and
heritage through partnership with the community and NGOs.

6. NPF - The Nayong Pilipino Foundation is a non-profit organization based


in Manila, Philippines It is an autonomous government corporation under
the Department of Tourism.

7. DFPC - The Duty Free Philippines Corporation shall be a body corporate to


operate the duty - and tax - free merchandising system in the Philippines to augment
the service facilities for tourists and to generate foreign exchange and revenue for
the government, as established by the Department under Executive Order No. 46. In
the performance of its functions, the DFPC shall have all the general powers of a
corporation established under the Corporation Code, in furtherance of its charter.
The DFPC shall have the exclusive authority to operate or franchise out stores and
shops that would sell, among others, duty. and tax - free merchandise, goods and
articles, in international airports and seaports, and in TEZs and ports of entry
throughout the country in a manner that, is competitive with international standards;
Effectively showcases Philippine culture, craftsmanship and industry; and Efficiently
and effectively generates foreign exchange.

8. PRA - The Philippine Retirement Authority is mandated to develop and promote


the Philippines as retirement haven as a means of accelerating the social and
economic development of the country, strengthening its foreign exchange position at
the same time providing further best quality of life to the targeted retirees in a most
attractive package. PRA is a government-owned and -controlled corporation
attached to the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) mandated to attract foreign
nationals and former Filipino citizens to invest, reside and retire in the Philippines
with the end-view of accelerating the socio-economic development of the country,
contributing to the foreign currency reserve of the economy and by providing them
the best quality of life in the most attractive packages.

9. PCSSD - The Philippine Commission on Sports SCUBA Diving is that the


Commission is hereby mandated to: 1. Promulgate programs and projects geared to
the development of the country as a premier diving area in Asia. 2. Formulate rules,
regulations, safety standards and operating procedures to implement the
development of Sports SCUBA Diving. 3. The Commission shall undertake studies,
researches and surveys for possible incentives to the private sector who may wish
to undertake projects and programs beneficial to the development of SCUBA Diving
Tourism within the framework of related Presidential Decrees. 4. The Commission is
expressly directed to formulate and implement programs on marine conservation,
particularly those areas of high touristic value.

IV. Professional

1. USTDC - The US Travel Data Center is an independent, nonprofit, and educational


organization which aims to improve the range and quality of statistical data
describing travel and tourism.

2. TIAA - The Travel Industry Association of America is a nonprofit association of


companies and government organizations which was formed to promote travel
within the United States. The objective or the organization is to develop and
implement programs that benefit the travel supplier consumer.

3. TTRA - The Travel and Tourism Research Association is concerned with travel
research, specifically in improving the quality and effectiveness of research in the
travel industry. The association aims to maintain current communication in travel
research development and methodology occurring in the field. It is concerned with
the teaching of tourism and has established communication procedures to support
education.
4. ASTA - The American Society of Travel Agents is one of the largest travel
association in the United States. It includes agencies and tour operators in the
United States and Canada. ASTA is subdivided into eleven areas. Among its
publications are: ASTA Travel News, ASTA Notes, Convention Daily Newspapers,
ASTA Rosters, ASTA Travel Correspondence Course.

5. UFTAA - The Universal Federation of Travel Agents Association acts as a


negotiating body for the various branches of tourism and travel industries on behalf
of travel agents. Give professional and technical advice and assistance to travel
agencies on world economy and tourism. Improve prestige and public recognition of
travel agents.

6. WAPTT - The World Association for Professional Training in Tourism is


concerned with vocational training.

7. CHRIE - The Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education is a


nonprofit association for schools, colleges and universities offering programs in hotel
and restaurant management, food service management and culinary arts. CHRIE
works to foster the international advancement of teaching, training, learning,
research and practice in the field of hospitality and tourism.

8. ATME - The Association of Travel Marketing Executives is a nonprofit research


and educational organization of individual travel marketing executives. ATME aims
to assist travel marketing executives toward greater personal achievement, success
and satisfaction. The members of ATME are professionals in an executive or
managerial capacity in work that is primarily but not exclusively related to marketing,
a travel product or service. A person who involved in creating, developing, or
promoting travel or travel products qualifies to be a member.

9. SOTTE - The Society of Travel and Tourism Education was founded in 1980. Its original
members were only fifteen. At present, there are 300 members representing all
levels of travel and tourism educators. SOTTE aims to: Increase professional
knowledge through the interaction with all levels of travel and tourism educators
Develop a network of peers with whom the members can learn and grow. Share
ideas, strategies, and research with the other members. Promote closer working
relationship between educators and the industry. Organize meetings and
conferences in which travel and tourism educators and industry executives will
discuss the education and training needs of the industry. Publish newsletter with the
latest information on educational issues, opportunities, and resources. Promote the
image and understanding of travel and tourism education within the larger arenas of
the industry and the academic world.

10. PTAA - The Philippine Travel Agencies Association is an organization born out
of a union of the national associations of outbound travel agencies and inbound tour
operators in 1979. It was founded to foster unity in the travel industry and to promote
the welfare of its members and the traveling public.

11. HRAP - The Hotel and Restaurant Association of the Philippines is taking the
lead roles as the single voice organization representing the Philippine private
business sector in the hotel and restaurant industry.

12. UFTE - The Union of Filipino Tourism Educators

13. COHREP - The COUNCIL OF HOTEL AND RESTAURANT EDUCATORS OF THE


PHILIPPINES is an organization of educators, trainers and industry practitioners
who affirms and avows its commitment to provide leadership towards the attainment
of excellence through the united efforts of its members.
