T
he public consultation meeting on
the Amochu hydroelectric project in
Phuentsholing on Thursday with vil-
lagers from Chukha and Samtse saw
some relevant questions raised by
those, who would be losing land to the project.
It goes to show that rural Bhutan has been close-
ly following developments. Villagers are also aware
that getting compensation, whether as substitute
land or in cash, can be a long drawn process.
This awareness probably comes from the fact
that villages in other parts of the country, like in
Wangdue, have to give up their land and, in some
cases, even their ancestral homes to the waters of
the project.
The government has given its word that the
affected families would be well compensated, yet

stitute plot that is up to the expectations of those
affected.
But the Phuentsholing consultation meeting also
had many of the villagers attending not saying any-
thing, because they could not understand what the
government officials were saying.
The request for an interpreter appears to have
been turned down. This was because, according MY SAY
to the concerned officials, all formal consultations
must take place in the national language.
Besides defeating the very purpose of holding a
public consultation, taking such a rigid stand does
not help in the promotion of the national language.
Rather it raises feelings of disgust that a small nation
like ours can do without. In appreciation

Bhutan’s leaders have made it a point to have
