Chapter 3

Methods of Research

This chapter deals with the methods and procedure used in this study

to gather the needed data. It includes the research design, respondents,

instruments used and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

A phenomenological research methodology was used for this study. As

its name suggest, phenomenology method is to describe the nature of

situation as it exist at the time of the study and to explore the causes of

particular phenomena. Phenomenology is solely concerned with the study of

the experience from the perspective of the co researcher. This type of

research focuses on the wholeness of the experience, rather than its

individual parts.

Sampling technique

The researcher used purposive sampling technique which researchers

select their co-researcher based on the characteristics of their co-researchers,

also because they fit a particular profile that will help the research more

effective.

Treatment of Data

The researcher will use the interview method to gather the needed

data. A consent form will first be given to the co-researchers along with a

copy of the interview questions for them to have an insight about the study.

Once the co-researcher agreed upon the request, the interview will be

conducted on the agreed time and date set. During the interview a voice

recorder will also be of use to record the answers of the co-researchers. This

will help the researchers to have the data gathered from the co-researchers.

The voice record will be the medium for the researchers to have the interview

documented. The data collected will then be transcribed from the recorded

answers of the co-researchers, after transcription of the data, it will then be

translated and interpreted by the researchers that will be the basis of the

outcome of this study.

Selection of Co-researcher

The researcher considered the selected College of Education Students in

Metro Manila College as co-researchers in this study to be able to know their

lived experience as volunteer of Dumagats students. The researcher chose

them to ensure the credibility and integrity of the information that the

researcher will gather.

Instrument Used

The research instrument used is interview, this is particularly useful for

getting the story behind a co-researcher’s experiences. The interviewer can

pursue in-depth information around the topic. Interviews may be useful as

follow-up to certain respondents to questionnaires, e.g., to further investigate

their responses. (Mcnamara, 1999)

A. Questionnaires

A questionnaire is defined as a research instrument that consists

a set of questions that is aligned to the statement of the problem.

Questionnaires aim to collect information such as insight and

experience of the co-researcher.

B. Cell phone Voice Recorder

The cell phone voice is a device used for recording during the

interview. The researcher used cellphone voice recorder as an aid to

collect the information and data that needed to the research
