My essay will attempt to answer the thought of how sexual assault effects one’s mental

health. Nowadays almost everyone knows at least one person who is a victim of some form of

sexual assault. Not everyone is affected the same way nor take the experience the same way and

that is just one of the many reasons why my interest on the subject grew. How is someone truly

affected by sexual assault? What goes on in their mind? No one will truly know until they

personally go through it although, I hope I can find some answers through my research.

Advocacy. “The Effects of Sexual Assault.” Advocacy, www.wcsap.org/help/about-sexual-

assault/effects-sexual-assault. Accessed 7 Apr. 2019.

When dealing with sexual assault, there is no wrong feeling for the victim. According to

Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault, “Not all survivors of sexual violence are the same, nor

will any act of sexual violence affect two people in the same way.” The article outlines the

different stages one goes through after being a victim of sexual assault. WCSAP argues that

sexual assault affects everyone in a different way and no way is considered wrong. The article

addresses many valid points that contribute to my research paper including the many different

ways survivors are impacted.

According to the headline of Amsterdam News, “Brooklyn Black boy falsely accused of

sexual assault by white woman.” This article states how a young black boy who goes by the

name of “littlejohn” was falsely accused by an older white woman where she stated that he

assaulted her where just a few days later, after the story had gone viral, she re-stated and

aplogized to the little boy. This article is a valuable resource to my paper because I believe that it

is important to include the counterargument of a research paper. This article proves that not all

cases of sexual assault are true, and it could be the male that is the victim.

Child Sexual Abuse Statistics, victimsofcrime.org/media/reporting-on-child-sexual-abuse/child-

sexual-abuse-statistics.

Children can also be victims of sexual assault even though most cases are not even

reported. The NCVC state that 1 of every 5 girls and 1 of every 20 boys are victims of child

sexual abuse. Also stated in the article is the idea that children who have had an experience of

rape or attempted rape during their childhood are about 14 times more likely to experience it in

their first year of college. This article plays a big role in my research paper because when we

think of sexual assault, we don’t typically think of children and this just goes to prove that it can

really happen to anyone, no matter the age. I plan to use this article in my paper to bring a better

understanding of the statistics of sexual assault and how any one is at risk of being a victim.

The statistics for sexual assault are higher than one would even guess without

researching. Sexual assault has placed a huge burden on the healthcare system. Stated in this

article, the main purpose is to cover the important issues that need to be addressed such as,

“Including provision of immediate care, referral to other services and practical advice for the

clinician.” Based on the data stated in the article, it is estimated that 1.9% of adults aged 16-59

years had been victims of sexual assault in the last year. This article is useful for my research

paper because it gives insight to all areas that are affected by sexual assault.

Miller, Korin. “What Is Sexual Assault (and What Isn't), According to the Law.” SELF,

www.self.com/story/sexual-assault-definition Accessed 7 Apr. 2019.

What does sexual assault really mean? In this article, Korin states that, “According to the

United States department of Justice, sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or behavior that

occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient.” Korin explains the different meanings of

what sexual assault really is and how it is perceived differently from different people.

Understanding the difference between what is and what isn’t sexual assault is very important

when it comes to the mental health of an individual. This article is useful for my research paper

because the effects of sexual assault on someone’s health come from not only the experience, but

how the individual perceived it from their own point of view.

boys. Accessed 7 Apr. 2019.

Men and boys who are victims of sexual assault experience if not the same, but similar

effects of other victims. According to RAINN, sexual assault does not have a specific taste.

Anyone can be a victim of sexual assault no matter their age, sexual orientation, or gender

identity. Many people will immediately think of a girl when they think sexual assault when in

reality, it can happen to men as well. This article outlines the ways men can be victims of assault

as well. This article is useful to my research because it brings a different perspective on who is

affected by sexual assault, which can be anyone.

It is hard to trust anything and anyone nowadays because people will do anything to get

the pleasure they want. In this New York Times post, a woman explains how she was raped by a

tour guide that she found off of TripAdvisor which, is a very popular resource used by many. The

woman claims how she selected the tour guide based off the “Steller reviews” on his page. This

article drew me in because it was written based off first-hand experience that a woman was

brave enough to explain. This article is useful for my research because no matter how much we

want to feel the pain a person goes through, we will never really understand it ourselves having

not went through it although, hearing the details of her experience brought me enough insight

to the horror of sexual assault.
