N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Lauren Gray Date of Activity: 03/21/19 and 04/01/19 Faculty name: Rajni

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be

specific about the purpose and your role):

The professional activities I attended were a Basic Life Support (BLS) class and an Acute Care

Life Support (ACLS) class. The purpose of each class was to learn and receive certification for

providing life support, whether it was basic or acute care. My role in each class was to learn and

demonstrate competence in the skills taught in the class in order to receive certification. In the

BLS class I learned how to perform CPR, use an AED, provide rescue breathing, and help

someone who is choking. In the ACLS class I learned how to recognize different heart rhythms

and how to respond accordingly. There was a focus on what to do if a patient develops a

dangerous cardiac arrhythmia or when a patient starts to code. I learned how to give chest

compressions in combination with life saving medications and defibrillation. Additionally, I

learned about maintaining a patent airway, including inserting an oral airway tube and a naso-

pharyngeal tube. Providing bag- mask respirations, which was learned in the BLS class as well,

was also reinforced. At the end of both classes, I performed my skills on a mannequin and took

a written test in order to receive certification.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

Both the BLS and ACLS classes were held at Eclipse CPR Training center on Speedway. The

BLS class was three hours long and the ACLS class was five hours long.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

This experience was highly valuable to me because it gave me knowledge that would be

important in potentially saving someone’s life. Additionally, it is important to have an

understanding of what is going on and what needs to be done in a code situation. The ACLS

class helped me become more confident in my ECG identification skills as well. Furthermore,

ACLS can help me with my career goals. For example, I want to work in intensive care and this

certification is usually required to work on an ICU. Although I am already employed by the

Navy, they have not assigned me to a specific unit yet, so if they see that I am already certified

in ACLS, it may help me in being place on either a step down unit or ICU. Finally, BLS is a

certification that is required to work anywhere, so it was valuable to take this class because my

old certification was going to expire soon.

Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why or

why not? (Describe)

I would recommend these professional experiences in the future to other students. I recommend

BLS because it is a certification needed to work in any health care setting. In regards to ACLS,

even if a student isn’t interested in working on an ICU, step down, or ER, I would still

recommend the class because you could have a patient code on a medical surgical floor or

another area as well. Additionally, the experience provided valuable reinforcement of

medications and cardiac rhythms which could be useful to know for the NCLEX. It also looks

good on a resume to have ACLS certification.
