Use of Generating Sensors
Objective
The student will learn to use the generator transducers, as well as to calibrate the different
components of a measurement system, in order to find the voltage value corresponding to
the variable under measurement.
Equipment used:
2 Multimeters 1 Protoboard.
1 Variable VCD source. 7 10KΩ resistors.
6 Banana-Cayman Tips. 2 0.01µF capacitors.
4 Cayman-Cayman Tips. 1 0.1µF capacitor.
1 10KΩ potentiometer.
2 LM358 or 3 LM741.
1 LM35.
1 AD620.

Figure 1
To make the adjustment of the voltage gain in the Instrumentation Amplifier, consider that
Rf = 100Ω and that the potentiometer Rg must be manipulated, for this to make a voltage of
1V in terminal E2 and terminal E1 connect it to ground. Place the potentiometer in such a
way that the output has a voltage of 1V for a voltage gain Av=1; or manipulate the
potentiometer so that the output has a voltage of 2V for a gain Av=2, and so on. This
operation must be repeated each time the gain value requested in table 1 must be adjusted.
After adjusting each gain value indicated in table 1, connect the output of the LM35 sensor,
which is used in place of a generator sensor, to terminal E2 as shown in figure 2 and start
filling the data that are requested in that table.
Figure 2
Repeat the same procedure above but now with the AD620 Instrumentation Amplifier,
energizing with ±12V and connecting your terminal 2 and 5 to ground (refer to figure 3). I
varied the value of RG, between terminals 1 and 8, for the adjustment of voltage gain taking
into account that Rf = 24.7KΩ and fill the table 2 considering that again the LM35 will be
present with its output connected to terminal 3.

Questionnaire
1. What is the main characteristic of a generator sensor?
2. What is the Instrumentation Amplifier used for?
3. What are the characteristics of the Instrumentation Amplifier?
4. What is the mathematical expression to calculate the voltage gain in the used
Instrumentation Amplifiers?
5. To measure the temperature with a thermocouple, how should that sensor be used
with the Instrumentation Amplifier?
