Duncan leads gold rush
HESWALL archery ace Duncan Busby twice struck gold for England in the
Commonwealth Games.
Busby won the team compound gold and then followed it up with the individual title, to
claim England’s 600th gold in Commonwealth Games history.
The 26-year-old, who is a member of the Blackthorn Bowmen’s Club, said: “It means
such a lot to me. England have taken all the medals in compound archery this time and
that’s very important this close to an Olympics.”

Store plan opposition

PLANS for a new Sainsbury’s store at the old Lookers car showroom on Pensby Road
have been greeted with protests. A petition of more than 120 names has been compiled
by people in the area who are worried about an increase in the number of delivery
lorries which they claim will be a danger to children crossing the road.

Well known GP retires

THE retirement has been announced of Dr Williams, senior partner of Heswall Medical
Centre. The GP left on on 1st October after 34 years at the surgery.
Practice manager Alison Williams said: “We wish him well for his retirement and he
will be missed very much by patients, staff and all associated with the practice. It is
wonderful dedication to the health service in providing
medical care to the local community as a GP for such

Marc launches
blindin’ new ranges
The owner of Apollo Blinds Wirral firm is gearing up for
a surge in enquiries and sales after launching two new
‘breathtaking’ ranges.
Marc McQuilliam travelled to Yorkshire to be one of
the first Apollo Blinds franchise owners in the UK
to pick up the company’s new vertical and roller
blinds collection books which are crammed full of
gorgeous new window blinds products.
He has already started showcasing the new
collections to customers and believes they
will be a big hit with homeowners who want
stunning and inspiring blinds which will make
their homes beautiful.
“I couldn’t wait so I went to Yorkshire to
pick up the new collections and it was worth
it because they are breathtaking and I know
my customers are going to love them,” he
said.
“Our business is all about inspiring
customers and showing them the art of the
possible and our new collections are right
at the cutting edge of home décor trends so
everyone in the Wirral and surrounding areas
can have blinds which are popular in all the
house and garden magazines right now.
“These collections are vital to the prosperity of
our business because they help us to stand out
from our competitors and reaffirm our position
as the area’s leading supplier of stunning ranges of
window blinds.”
Marc’s collections contain more than 350 different
fabrics in the roller blinds book and nearly 300 in the
verticals collections. And, nearly 200 of the roller blind fabrics
are also available as vertical blinds which means homeowners have
never had so many options to carry themes throughout their homes.
“Our new collections are absolutely fantastic and I’m very proud to be able to show such groundbreaking
collections to my customers,” said Marc.
“But arguably the most important thing is our company’s commitment to child safety and, as with the
previous collections, all our blinds come with free safety products to ensure no child can be harmed by the
cords of our products.”
For more information about the new collections and how Apollo Blinds can make homes in the Wirral
Area beautiful either call 0151 203 6160 or visit www.apollo-blinds.co.uk/wirral.

WIRRAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

Wirral Grammar School for Girls has been a Grammar School catering for girls aged 11-19 since 1931 and
they now have just over 1,000 pupils, 300 of them in the sixth form.
The results at ‘A’-Level are outstanding: There is a 100% pass rate and an average UCAS point score of 411.0.
67% gained the top A* to B grades. These results placed us among the top schools in Wirral and the North
West. In 2010 all the girls who applied to university were offered a place, the majority at leading institutions
including Oxford and Cambridge.
One of the schools many strengths are the number of girls studying mathematics at Advanced level. There are
currently 136 girls studying this subject and this has necessitated the building of two new classrooms to house
the growing numbers studying this important subject.
The school is justifiably proud of the varied clubs and societies that the girls take part in. They have highly
successful sports teams, orchestras, and choirs. Many subject departments organise visits both locally and abroad.
Sixth form girls support many charities, most recently raising £1200 for Clatterbridge Cancer Research and
£1000 for the national “Jeans for Genes” day.
You will find here a school which is not only achieving outstanding academic results but where there is a
busy, lively buzz of activity and learning. They have
always fostered traditional values, notably self-
discipline, community spirit and thoughtfulness
for others.
Wirral Grammar School for Girls has the
most up-to-date resources and facilities
that prepare their students for life as adults
in the 21st century. The whole school
community are delighted that they are one
of the few schools to have three specialisms
and are now a Language College, a
Humanities College and a Science College.

West Wirral Car Club

Ugly Duckling Becomes a Thing of Beauty

(Referring to the car, of course!)

After introducing you to a 1930

Austin 7, affectionately known
as Vanessa in my last piece,
this time we are looking at a
very different type of car.
Our picture this month is of
a genuine Daimler sports
car built in 1962 before
the luxury car maker was
taken over by Jaguar.
Introduced in 1959 as
the Daimler Dart, the car
got off to a bad start when
Chrysler claimed they had
already registered the use of the
Dart name. The car was subsequently
called the Daimler Sport 250 which was then
abbreviated to SP250. SP for Sport and 250 for the
engine size of 2500cc.
A second snag soon appeared when it was discovered that the doors would mysteriously
open of their own accord during enthusiastic cornering manoeuvres. This was eventually
blamed on the chassis not having sufficient rigidity for the unusual fibreglass body and
was sorted for the following year.
However by now the company had been taken over by Jaguar who were just about to
introduce their first E Type which was much more advanced than the Daimler. The SP250,
which was not proving to be a good seller, subsequently disappeared from the market
in 1964. Jaguar however knew a good engine when they saw one and hung on to the
beautiful 2500cc V8 motor, which had been specially designed for the SP250, and used it
in other cars.
The SP250 was quick in its day and had all round disc brakes to slow it down. The cars
were successful and extensive in competition and although used by police for high speed
pursuit, they remained plagued by a reputation for poor quality. Hence only 1415 LHD
cars were built plus 1229 RHD models for export. It’s rarity and unusual style are now
considered to enhance it’s dramatic appearance and appeal, making it a true and popular
icon of the sixties.
The car pictured here was first bought by the Marquess of Hertford in 1962 and has been
owned by its current owner Peter Broadbent since the year 2000. Peter, who previously
had owned a Triumph Spitfire, acquired the Daimler just after it had undergone a full
body-off restoration. He has found it to be a very reliable car; a joy and delight to own and
drive.

Homeowners choose to
improve rather than move
As the housing market continues in its post-recession recovery, homeowners in the region are
choosing to make improvements to their existing home rather than to find a new one.
One industry source claimed that the popularity of home show events and the abundance of home
makeover and DIY television programmes continues to demonstrate a trend as more and more
homeowners look to improve and ‘do up’ their properties.
It’s a trend that’s been acknowledged by leading North West based
Glazing Company, Dee Glass.
“We’ve seen a huge surge in homeowners choosing to improve their
homes rather than move to a new property. Replacing old windows and
doors to smarten up their properties seems to be high on our customers
to do lists.” commented Andy Spindler, Director of Dee Glass. “Homeowners are also far more

BOOK REVIEWS:
NOVEMBER NOVELS
BY ELEANOR DAVIES, FROM LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Fiction: Room – Emma Donoghue

Narrated by 5 year old Jack whose mother was kidnapped before his birth and
incarcerated in a hidden room by her captor, this novel was inspired by the true story
of Natascha Kampusch, the Austrian girl who was held in solitary captivity for 8 years.
However, Room is not nearly as gruesome as it sounds- rather it is a touching and
often funny picture of maternal love in dire circumstances through the eyes of a little
boy who has never known anything different. When the mother and son are released
into the real world halfway through the novel, the reader is led to engage with
questions about the nature of true freedom. Shortlisted for this years Man Booker
Prize and in a compact little hardback, Room is unlike any other book I’ve read.
Thoroughly recommended for reading groups.

Autobiography: The Fry Chronicles- Stephen Fry

When Stephen Fry arrived at Cambridge University he was
on probation: ‘a convicted fraudster and thief, an addict, liar,
fantasist and failed suicide who appeared to have nothing
going for him’. To his surprise he found love, friendship
and his first major opportunities to entertain on-stage. It
was at Cambridge that he met Emma Thompson and Hugh
Laurie, and, after working out how to cheat the university
exam system, began to emerge as the amazingly talented
comic individual we all think we know so well today. In this
courageously frank, honest and poignant memoir Stephen
has recorded some of the most turbulent and least well
known years of his life. His autobiography will make you
laugh uproariously, move you, inform you and, above all, surprise you. Packed with
glossy colour photos taken through his life, this is an ideal Christmas present for his
fans.

Humour A Brief History of Tim (the world minus one letter)

- Kathy Klugston
Rather than explaining our origins, A Brief History of Tim addresses our history and
culture at the level we most deeply desire – the trivial. By simply removing one letter,
the world is tweaked, with immensely enjoyable results.
ENTERTAINMENT

e.g. ‘ I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t re-use’ (Marlon Brando igniting the
debate about re-cycling), or ‘O hello’- (Desdemona isn’t expecting Iago to pop round.)
And then there’s Bet Blockers- (those pills prescribed for people with a gambling
problem) and ‘The Empire Trikes Back- (Luke Skywalker is forced to flee Darth Vader
on a small three- wheeled bicycle.)
Get it? A brilliant little stocking filler- will keep you chuckling for ages.
