Course : MAT2001 - Statistics for Engineers

Class NBR(s):4509 / 4512 Slot: D1+TD1
Time: Three Hours Max. Marks: 100
Statistical Tables and Gamma Function Table are permitted
Answer any FIVE Questions
(5 X 20 = 100 Marks)
1. a) Find the mean, median and mode for the following frequency distribution. [10]
Class Interval: 0– 10 10–20 20–30 30–40 40–50 50–60 60–70 70–80
Frequency: 5 8 7 12 28 20 10 10
b) Calculate the mean, variance and standard deviation for the following frequency distribution, and [10]
hence obtain the value of co-efficient of variation.
x: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
f: 1 8 28 56 70 56 28 8 1
2. a) The distribution function of a continuous random variable X is given by [10]
1  (1  x )e  x ; x  0 ;
F ( x)  
0 ; otherwise .
Find the probability density function, mean, variance and standard deviation of X.
b) If X denotes the number of aces and Y denotes the number of queens obtained when 2 cards are [10]
randomly drawn without replacement from a standard deck of cards, then obtain the joint
probability distribution of (X,Y).
3 a) If the joint probability density function of a continuous random variable (X,Y) is given by [10]
ky (1  x); x  0 ;
f ( x, y )  
0 ; otherwise ,
then find the value of k and the expected value of XY.
b) Compute the coefficient of correlation between X and Y and hence obtain the equations of the [10]
regression lines from the following data:
X 22 26 29 30 31 31 34 35
Y 20 20 21 29 27 24 27 31

4. a) If a fair coin is tossed at random 5 independent times, then find the conditional probability of 5 [10]
heads relative to the hypothesis that there are at least 4 heads.
b) The amount of time that a watch will run without having to be reset is a random variable having an [10]
exponential distribution with mean 120 days. Find the probability that such a watch will
(i). have to be set in less than 24 days, and (ii). not have to be reset in at least 180 days.
5. a) A manufacturer of light bulbs claims that generally 2% of the bulbs produced by his firm are [10]
defective. A random sample of 400 bulbs contained 13 defective bulbs. Are these sample results
consistent with the manufacturer’s claim at 99% level of confidence?
b) The average mark scored by 32 boys is 72 with a standard deviation of 8, while that for 36 girls is [10]
70 with a standard deviation of 6. Test whether the boys are performing better than girls at 5%
level of significance.

6. a) Two independent samples of sizes 8 and 7 contained the following values: [10]
Sample I : 19 17 15 21 16 18 16 14
Sample II : 15 14 15 19 15 18 16
Is the difference between the sample means significant at 95% of level of confidence?
b) The following data represent the number of units of production per day turned out by 5 different [10]
workers using 4 different types of machines.
Machine Types
A B C D
1 44 38 47 36
2 46 40 52 43
Workers 3 34 36 44 32
4 43 38 46 33
5 38 42 49 39
Test whether the five workers differ with respect to mean productivity.

7. a)  t  [10]
The reliability of a turbine blade is given by R (t )  1   , 0  t  t 0 , where t 0 is the
 t0 
maximum life of the table.
(i). Show that the blades are experiencing wear out.
(ii). Compute MTTF as a function of the maximum life.
(iii). If the maximum life is 2000 operating hours, then compute the design life for a reliability of
0.90.
b) Explain in detail about the statistical applications in genetics? [10]
