• For vertical flume we have to take two
measurements. In standing wave flume only c/s
depth measurement is sufficient because at throat
flow is critical.

• The flow is critical at the throat H

• H refers total energy at the u/s of the channel

(Depth of flow H)

• b  Width of throat

STANDING WAVE FLUME

• In these flumes the flow is critical.

• It has got something connected with wave.
• So it is called standing wave flume.

07 Feb 2017 Dr GK Viswanadh Prof. of Civil 5

Engg. & OSD to VC JNTUH
• Change from critical condition to subcritical
condition as the depth of flow is more in standing
wave flume.
• Due to greater depth of flow more irrigated area can
be commanded.
• Due to the change of flow, Hydraulic Jump Occurs

• Afflux: Heading up of water on u/s side due to the

construction obstruction like piers etc

PROBLEM 1 :

• Uniform flow occurs at a depth of 1.5m in a

rectangular channel 3m wide and laid at a slope of
0.0009 If Manning’s n = 0.015, find the width of
