Installing 5 Million

Games Databases
TobyChess provides 5
Million Chess Games
in databases which
can help you study
and improve your
opening play
We store these chess
games in 3-database
collections on DVD’s
or a hard drive for you
to use
These are seen in the
root directory pictured
here
Chess Games are recorded & stored in
files. These files are called databases.
When you enter a chess game
you played in a tournament,
the computer records the
moves and stores them in a
text file seen here (called
PGN)
There are 2 games in a row
listed here. A database of
games will have 1 to several
millions of games in a file like
this. Most people save their
games in a single file adding
each one as they play them.
Some like to create a database
for each tournament and save
only the few games they
played in each database
Games are presented as
databases in different ways
Fritz & ChessBase
present games in
databases with a
board and the list of
moves & annotations
in paragraphs as you
see here.
Fritz can read in and
present all of our
games in this format
Deep Tactics presents
a game like this
We show the
moves made on
our board while
displaying the
move list in a row
instead of a
paragraph like Fritz
The annotations
will appear on the
right
Lets install the games to our
computers hard drive
You can use the
databases directly off
of the DVD disc that
they came on. We will
show you how to do
this shortly.
Most people want the
databases on their
hard drive so they
don’t have to put discs
in the drive each time
they want to use them
We start by going to
the drive and selecting
the Database we want
to copy
Finding the drive with your
databases!
1. Right click on the
start button on your
computer. This gives
you a menu seen here
on top. Select Explore
by left clicking on it
This brings up a
window which lets you
explore your drives on
the computer
Explore lets you see
what is on each drive
On the left side of the
window you can see the
main drives and folders
inside each drive.
By clicking on a drive or
folder on the left side,
you can see what is in
the folder on the right
side
If we had a DVD in our
computer tray it would
display the name of the
DVD where it now says
DVD/CDRW DRIVE (D):
Before installing (copying) check
for hard drive space
You need to make
sure your hard drive
has enough free space
to hold the databases
Left click on Drive C to
highlight it and the
right click on it to
bring up the menu
seen here
Now left click on
“properties”
Windows shows you how much
space is used and free
The properties
window now
displays in a
graph, how much
space is left on my
C Drive
I have 12.3 GB
(Gigabytes) free
which is barely
enough to hold all
the databases
To install the databases all you do
is copy them to your hard drive
The 5 million games are
enormous files which
come on 3 DVD’s and
take up 11.4 Gigabytes
of space on your hard
drive. If you do not have
enough space you can
select only the openings
you want to study and
copy only those games to
your drive, or you can
use them off of the disc.
Select the file you want
to copy on the disc by
left clicking on it once.
This will highlight it.
Copy by dragging & dropping
Find the folder (in
this case database
#1 on our E drive)
and hold down the
left mouse button
while dragging it to
the C drive on your
computer
It will start to copy
Copying begins to your C drive
We drag the folder
from the right side
directory to the target
on the left side.
Copying can take
several minutes
Here we told the
computer to copy the
Database #1 to our
hard drive C by
dragging and dropping
it onto the C drive
icon
Database #1 is now on the C Drive
We can see that
Database #1 now
appears on the C
Drive as a folder.
Many people want all
their chess databases
in a single folder on
the C drive which they
may name “Chess
Databases” or
whatever name they
wish
Creating a folder to put
everything into it
With the C drive
highlighted, you can
select File and then
New and Folder
You can name the
folder “Chess
Databases”. This will
give you a place to
look for every
database you have for
use by any chess
program. Keep it on
the C drive so you can
find it easily if you are
starting out
Another way to copy databases
Find the database you
want to copy and then
right click on it to highlight
it and bring up the menu
seen here. Select Copy by
left clicking on it. This tells
the computer you want to
copy this folder
Now find our directory we
just made called Chess
Databases and right click
on the folder to highlight it
and then select “Paste”
from the menu. The
database will then copy to
this folder.
Easy to Use By Toby Chess
You can also store all
databases in the Toby
Chess Folder
This folder is found
under the C drive
inside a folder called
“Program Files”
This makes it easier
for Deep Tactics to
find it but harder for
you if you are not
skilled on the
computer
Databases are broken down into
Openings for easy study
Each Database
collection is broken
down into Openings
and the variations
The variations use
common names and
ECO codes to identify
which openings they
are
The openings are
listed in the order of
their ECO code- 58,
59, 60 etc.
More help files like this one
With the databases
are acrobat files like
this one which provide
the move list and
common names which
correspond to the ECO
codes
In our early years we
built a tree trainer into
Deep Tactics and
there are directions
for using the
databases in tree
training here
