Lecture: Friday, May 10th 2:00-3:00 PM in Cramer Hall (CH) 401


Field Trip: Saturday, May 11th 7:00 AM – Sunday, May 12th 6:00 PM

Course Description: An introduction to the geology of the Western Blue Mountains


and adjacent areas of central Oregon. Integration of field data concerning rock types,
paleontology, stratigraphy, folding and faulting to interpret paleoclimate, regional
geologic patterns, and landscape evolution.

Grading: This course is 1 credit Pass/No Pass. To get credit, you must attend
both the lecture and field trip. In addition, you must turn in a
completed field trip packet at the end of the field trip.

Field Trip: We will depart at 7:00 AM sharp from the corner of Broadway and
Mill Street (outside Cramer Hall). Saturday night, we will camp at
Shelton Wayside park. You must bring camping gear and be prepared
for all weather conditions. No private vehicles allowed.

Assignment: All assignments for this course are completed during the trip. You will
receive a guidebook on the bus at the start of the trip and must turn it
in completed when we return to PSU Sunday evening.
Camping Considerations
We will camp at Shelton Wayside near the summit of the Ochoco Mountains on
Saturday night. You will need to be prepared for cool weather. Night-time
temperatures could be in the 30’s. Many of the following items are available to rent
from the PSU Outdoor Program.

To bring: Tent
Warm sleeping bag
Air mattress or some type of sleeping pad (ground is cold)
Lantern or flashlight
Sun screen and hat
Camera (optional)
Binoculars (optional)
Water bottle
Food
Cooking equipment
Rock hammer and hand lens (optional)
Materials for digging fossils (optional)
Sample bags to protect specimens (optional)

Food: You may provide your own food or collaborate with others in a
cooking group. Cooking group sign-up sheets are in the Department of
Geology office (Cramer Hall room 17). Either way, arrange menus and
purchase food for Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast,
and Sunday lunch. Bring a camping stove with fuel. All fuel must be
stored in a compartment under the bus. There will be a very brief stop
at a store in Mitchell, OR on Saturday afternoon.
