AEP LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Teachers’ Names: Lillie Budnick, Kailee Brandon, Cassidy Crane

Art lesson title: Dots n’ Spots
Grade/age Level: Grade 5 (12 students)
Rationale/Goals: We are teaching about contrast, pattern, and pointillism. The
technique of pointillism takes steadiness and patience, two attributes that will help with
other subjects. We will also teach the idea of contrasting colors.

South Carolina Academic Standards for the Visual & Performing Arts:
http://ed.sc.gov/instruction/standards-learning/
Anchor Standard 1: I can use the elements and principles of art to create artwork.
Anchor Standard 2: I can use different materials, techniques, and processes to make
art.

**Objectives:

Students will use q-tips and temper paint to create the technique of pointillism that was
inspired by Georges Seurat.
Students will create art using the principles of contrasting colors and the element of
pointillism.
Students will create a pattern of circles using the techniques.

***Assessment strategies:
Informal: Discussion and observation
Formal: Rubric about contrasting colors and pointillism used in their created piece (Not
used for GoalPOST)
Rubric for Dots n’ Spots
● No circles that are directly beside each other have the same color.
○ The same color from two different circles do not touch
● Each circle pattern is made of 2 contrasting colors
● The circles are made of distinct dots
● No large areas of black remaining

Key Concepts:
Pointillism: Is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in
patterns to form an image
Contrasting colors: Two colors from different segments of the color wheel are
contrasting colors (also known as complementary or clashing colors). For example, red
is from the warm half of the color wheel and blue is from the cool half. They are
contrasting colors. ... Reds and greens are contrasting colors
Pattern: An underlying structure that organizes surfaces or structures in a consistent,
regular manner

Lesson Sequence:
1. Welcome: Greet the students, give them a smock and make sure they are all
tied. Tell the students our names, ask the students their names and ask their
favorite color.
2. Intro: Present the powerpoint. Ask students to not touch any materials on the
table and pay attention to the teachers up front.

a. While one or two people are presenting, begin passing out the plastic
palettes with paint on them and the q-tips and the black paper
i. Before beginning the PPT presentation, tell the students that we will
be preparing the materials but they must not touch them until told to
do so.
3. While they are still paying attention to the teachers and not touching their
materials, tape a sheet of paper to the whiteboard/ whatever area is available,
and model two or three circles
4. Ask every student if they understand how to do it, if yes, tell them they can get
started, and to ask us questions along the way if they need help
5. Us three will split up and monitor a group, and step in if a student needs help
6. Once it looks like most people only have the corners, or small black spaces left,
ask them all to pause.
7. Model how to finish the corners or the small black spaces on the previously
worked on painting.
8. If students seem to be not close to being done, depending on time, go over to
their desk and motivate them to finish up and stay focused.
9. Direct students to throw away their paper plates and q-tips and to sit their wet
papers in a specific place, will be determined once we are there and
communicate with the cooperating teacher.
10. Depending on time: either get 3 to 4 students to wipe down desks with baby
wipes, then we could quickly do it with clorox. (if any paint got on the desks)

Being able to design and implement a lesson was a big eye opener. I have taught students

before, but I have never designed the lesson that I taught. Designing a lesson from start to finish

is harder than I thought, especially for art. Art is not my strongest area, so I underestimated

myself from the start. I was nervous before starting the lesson plan, and while creating the lesson

plan. After going through two lesson plans that did not really fit the subject, and then not begin

able to find a good lesson, I was really worried. However, after I had finished the lesson plan,

and had step by step instructions for what I was going to do while in the classroom, I was no

longer nervous, and much more comfortable. After teaching the lesson to our classmates, I got a

really good feel for what to do and what not to do. Our opening presentation took too long,

therefore not giving our classmates enough time to complete their art. So, we took out a few of

the examples of pointillism and changed a few other things. As far as implementing the lesson, I

think me and my two partners did great. We reached the needs of diverse students by just talking

to them and discussing what we were going to do at first, then presenting a PowerPoint with

pictures and engaging people with questions, then giving the students a live model. I think my

group also helped reach the diverse needs of students because there were three of us and only

twelve students. Having such a small ratio helped us teachers know exactly what each student

needed. After only being around the students for thirty minutes, I feel like I knew their

personalities good. With the group of four that I helped, one was really outgoing and liked to

show off her work and get praise. Another student was a perfectionist, she did not care how

much time it would take her, as long as each aspect of her art work was perfect, she also did not

need much guidance. Another student needed approval and confirmations before she went on to

the next step, she wanted to make sure she was doing everything right, and she really enjoyed
having a model to refer back to. The last student that I worked closely with was very free going,

she liked to think outside the box, and do different things that were not in the model. Being able

to witness such diverse people so closely makes me excited for a larger group that I will have in

the future.

I think a lot of the lesson went well. The students were really engaged at every point in

the lesson, which was probably the best thing for me. Knowing that us as teachers did a good job

at making everyone understand and think about what we were talking about makes me happy.

Time management also went well. However, for the future I would probably spend more than 30

minutes on it. If I taught this lesson in my own classroom, I might would stretch it out over two

days. I would add a little more information to the presentation to make sure each student had a

clear understanding of each vocabulary word, as well as each artist example. Then, I would give

the students more time to create their artwork so that they wouldn’t feel rushed and they could

really think about the colors they used and the placement of their circles. I would also assess the

students understanding differently in the future. I would probably have either a class kahoot or a

short quiz to make sure all the students understand the vocabulary words, especially examples of

contrasting colors.

I learned a lot about myself as a teacher. The main thing being that I am sympathetic

towards students. I wanted each student to do good and finish the tasks that they were doing. I

also understand now, exactly how each student is different in so many ways. The other big thing

I realized is that in order for me to stay calm and excited and not worried about a lesson is to be

super organized way ahead of time. I feel like both of these things are good attributes of teachers,

so I am glad I realized these things about me.
