GEOG 1 Artifact and Reflection 3: Evidence of Course Student Learning

Outcome 3

1. Define your course Learning Outcome 3 (SLO 3). HINT: You may have to look
this up in your course syllabus.

SLO 3: Formulate geographic research questions and hypothesis to evaluate solutions to complex
real world physical geography problems.

The last article I chose was from Discussion 4: Evaluate and apply solutions to complex real
world physical geography problems. I did research on recent physical geography problems. I
then evaluated the problems it caused and came up with possible solutions to prepare for future
events.

2. What geographic research question(s) (an answerable scientific question) and

hypothesis ( proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a
starting point for further investigation) did you formulate (produce, create,or
develop) in this class?

A geographic research question I chose is, what steps has the U.S. taken to prepare for future
disasters like earthquakes? If so, have these steps been implemented in schools to teach the
younger generation? I predict that if, actually when, a massive earthquake hits; it’ll be a disaster.
Mainly because we were unprepared and weren’t taught of what to do in situations like these.

3. What complex real world physical geography problem(s) did you evaluate (to
judge or calculate the quality of)?

I did research on an earthquake that took place in Anchorage, Alaska. It’s magnitude was 7.0,
luckily, there were no casualties that took place. During my research, I found out that there are
problems with the system of earthquake preparation. Specifically, teaching the younger
generation of the steps to take before, during, and after an earthquake. In school there should be a
class, at least a seminar, of the the steps to take during a disaster. Personally, the only earthquake
preparation I learned from school was to stay under my desk during an earthquake. In the end,
earthquake preparedness should be taught at a young age.
