CRITICAL ANALYSIS TEMPLATE

(LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT – TASK FOR 10-11 November 2016)

In this critical analysis, you have to type in the font size 12 Times New Roman, space 1.5 and A4
paper. In a critical analysis essay you systematically evaluate one of the plenary speakers’ presentation
you have chosen in SIEC 2016 including what it does well and what does it poorly. You must listen
to the talk carefully and may need to look up terms or concepts you are unfamiliar with or research
related reading prior to writing your essay. The following is the template that you may use for writing
your critical analysis essay. Write not more than 1500 words for your whole essay. Do not forget to
write your identity including Name, NIM and class. This essay should be submitted via
mettyagustine@unsil.ac.id and cc to asrisitifatimah@yahoo.co.id on November 20, 2016 at least at
12.00 p.m.
Introduction  State the title of the work, the presenter’s name and the date his/her
presentation.
 Outline the main ideas of the presentation and identify the speaker’s thesis
 State your own thesis statement and your main idea about the presentation

The article “Narratives of intercultural transformation” by Ingrid Adams is


informative and insightful because the author …. (THIS IS THE EXAMPLE OF
INTRODUCTION OF CRITICAL ANALYSIS ESSAY FOR AN ARTICLE)
The presentation “(TITLE) by (PRESENTER”S NAME) is ………….. because
the presenter …….. (Here you may use your own words, but it should show an
introduction of your essay)

Summary  Briefly outline the main ideas of the presentation


 Should involve who, what, where, when, why and how
 You may also choose to discuss the structure, style or point of view

Analysis  Critically state what you like and do not like about the presentation
 Explain your ideas with specific examples from the book or other articles

 Assess whether the presenter has achieved their intended goal
 The analysis may look at whether the work is:
- focused, understandable, persuasive, clear, informative
- original, exciting, interesting, well-written
- directed at the appropriate conclusions, and more …
 The analysis is made up of several different paragraphs

Conclusion  Restate your thesis in new words


 Summarize your main ideas if possible with new and stronger words
 Include a call to action for your reader
