I.

Objectives
- Create a model volcano using basic tools and ingredients.
- Illustrate the processes involved in volcanic eruption.
- Compare and contrast the volcanic eruptions produced by different
substances.

II. Materials
For the Volcano Model;
- 6 cups of flour
- 5 tablespoons cooking oil
- 3 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups water
- Mixing bowl
- Baking pan
- Soda bottle

For the Volcanic Eruption;

- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 2 teaspoons yeast
- 6 mL liquid detergent
- ¼ cup lemon juice
- ½ cup hydrogen peroxide
- Food coloring (red or orange)
- Stirring rod
III. Procedure
Volcano Model
1. Create the salt dough by mixing the following ingredients: flour,
salt, cooking oil, and water in a large mixing bowl, Work the
ingredients with your clean hands until smooth and firm. You may
add water, if necessary.
2. Place the soda bottle in the baking pan. Mold the salt dough
around the bottle, making sure you build your volcano with as
much details as you like.
3. In a cup, mix ¼ cup water, 1 tablespoon baking soda, 6 mL liquid
detergent, and three drops food coloring.
4. Pour the prepared mixture into the “mouth” of your volcano.

Volcanic Eruption
1. Slowly pour vinegar into the bottle and watch how furious your
model volcano is. Record your observations.
2. Clean area for another experiment.
3. Repeat step 3 used in volcano model.
4. Perform step 1 of volcanic eruption this time using ¼ cup lemon
juice.
5. Repeat step 2 of volcanic eruption.
6. Add 2 teaspoons of quick-rising yeast into the mouth of your
volcano.
7. Mix ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide with three drops of food coloring.
8. Pour hydrogen mixture into the mouth of your volcano.
9. Stir it using a stirring rod.

Note: Observer proper distance while pouring substances into the mouth of
your volcano.

V. Questions for Analysis

1. Based on your data in the table above, how do you compare the
volcanic eruptions using substances? Support your answer with
graphs.
2. What do you think are the factors that affect the magnitude of your
volcanic eruption?
3. Describe the types of reactions that occurred in this simple
experiment.
4. What do the following materials represent?
a. dough
b. bottle
c. vinegar
d. lemon juice
e. hydrogen peroxide

VI. Conclusion
